WMTE-FM
WMTE-FM (101.5 MHz "Eagle 101.5") is a radio station located in Manistee, Michigan, United States, and owned by 45 North Media, Inc. WMTE-FM airs an adult hits format and positions itself as Uniquely Northern Michigan. History The station was signed on in June 1994 by the original owner, Bay View Broadcasting. The original call letters were WXYQ and the station adopted an oldies format. Those call letters were previously used by an AM country station in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. WXYQ was sold to Crystal Clear Communications for $200,000.00 in January, 1997. When new stations arrived in 1999, the new FCC rules allowed WXYQ to be consolidated into the Lake Michigan Broadcasting Group. When the FCC transfer was approved for $380,000.00 in 2000, Lake Michigan Broadcasting changed the call letters. WMLQ
WMLQ (97.7 FM, "News 97 & 98") is a radio station located in Manistee, Michigan broadcasting a news/talk format, simulcasting WLDN 98.7 FM Ludington. The station began broadcasting in 1970 under the WMTE-FM call sign (the current WMTE-FM, at 101.5, is unrelated, but was a sister station of WMLQ for a short time in 2012 and 2013). In the 1980s, the station was WRRK, playing Top 40 music. From 1995 to 2006, the station simulcast WVXU in Cincinnati, Ohio as WVXM, an affiliate of the "X-Star Radio Network," which featured a variety of programs, including news, talk, jazz, and adult standards. After WVXU was sold to the owners of classical station WGUC in Cincinnati, all of WVXA's former repeater stations were sold off to other owners; 97.7 FM was purchased by Synergy Media, owners of classic rock station WWKR in Hart, Michigan. The station airs an adult hits format as ''Eagle 101.5'', and is owned by 45 North Media Inc, a company owned by Bryan Hollenbaugh. History Beginnings For many years, WMJZ operated at the class A frequency of 95.3 FM, and a power output of only 3,000 watts. The station first went on the air on February 20, 1984 as WZXM-FM with a Top 40/CHR format, as the FM sister station of AM 900 WZXM, which had been on the air since 1950, first as WATC, which was originally part of the Paul Bunyan Network. WWMN (106.3 FM) is a radio station owned by John Yob, through licensee Mitten News LLC. Licensed to Thompsonville, Michigan, the station serves the Traverse City market with a coverage area extending from the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula south to Manistee and Cadillac. History WWMN began operations in May 1971 as WKLA-FM and spent much of its programming day simulcasting its AM sister station throughout the 1970s. Around 1980, the station further separated programming from the AM's Middle of the Road format by moving into Adult Contemporary, which has been the station's format since, although the station still simulcast the AM during certain dayparts until 2000. Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel (also known more recently as ''The True Oldies Channel: Greatest Hits'') is a radio network begun in the spring of 2004. Originally distributed by ABC Radio Networks via satellite, the service plays a hybrid oldies/classic hits format comprising music mostly from 1964 to 1979 but also plays selected cuts from the 1955-1963 era and also from the 1980s. As of September 22, 2016, it is distributed via United Stations Radio Networks. Prior to June 30, 2014; the service had over 100 affiliate stations across the United States. WLDN is an FM radio station owned by Synergy Media and is licensed to Ludington, Michigan. WLDN broadcasts from studios in Ludington, Michigan along with sister stations WKLA, WWMN, WKZC, WMLQ, and WWKR. It runs a news/talk/sports format and can be heard as far north as Copemish, Michigan, as far east as Reed City, Michigan, and as far south as Whitehall, Michigan. Under certain conditions, it can be heard in parts of northeastern Wisconsin and in Traverse City, Michigan. Classic hits is a radio format which generally includes songs from the top 40 music charts from the late 1960s to the early 2000s, with music from the 1980s serving as the core of the format. Music that was popularized by MTV in the early 1980s and the nostalgia behind it is a major driver to the format. It is considered the successor to the oldies format, a collection of top 40 songs from the late 1950s through the late 1970s that was once extremely popular in the United States and Canada.
