WMNP (99.3 FM, "Mixx 99.3") is an American radio station licensed to serve the community of Block Island, Rhode Island. The station is owned by 3G Broadcasting, Inc. Its studio is located in Newport, Rhode Island. WMNP broadcasts a Top 40 (CHR) music format that targets southern Rhode Island, Southeastern Connecticut and the South Coast of Massachusetts. History Established in 1984 as WITQ, it officially signed on in October 1988 as WBLQ. The WBLQ callsign is now on 1230 AM owned by former WBLQ alum Chris DiPaola. The format was automated adult contemporary until the early 1990s when the station shifted its programming to an eclectic album rock format. In 1996 the station was sold to Bear Broadcasting and the callsign changed to WERI-FM. The operation was moved to Newport in 1999 when Astro Tele-communications rebranded the station as Swing FM running a swing, jazz and standards format which WJZS were the calls. WADK (1540 AM) is a radio station licensed to serve Newport, Rhode Island, United States. The station is owned by 3G Broadcasting, Inc. It airs a news/talk format, with jazz airing each weekend. The station, the first to be built on Aquidneck Island, signed on the air in 1948 and has used the callsign WADK since November 23, 1953. Its broadcast tower has been located off Garfield Street in Newport since 1967. History On December 2, 1947, John E. and Irene "Reeny" A. Malloy, doing business as Voice of Little Rhody, filed for a construction permit to build a new radio station on 1540 kHz at Newport, which was granted by the Federal Communications Commission on August 4, 1948. New Shoreham is a town in Washington County, Rhode Island that is coextensive with Block Island. The town was named for Shoreham, Kent, in England. According to the Census Bureau, it has a total area of , of which is land and (91.11%) is water. It was founded as the American Research Bureau by Jim Seiler in 1949 and became national by merging with Los Angeles-based Coffin, Cooper, and Clay in the early 1950s. The company's initial business was the collection of broadcast television ratings. WBLQ (1230 AM) is a radio station licensed to serve Westerly, Rhode Island. The station is owned by Diponti Communications. History 1940s 1949 The station, then called WERI, began broadcasting on 1230kc. on July 1, 1949, using Day/Night power of 250 watts, non-directional. The station still uses its original 185-foot, Blaw-Knox, self-supporting tower, on Margin Street, beside the Pawcatuck River. 1960s The FCC increases the daytime power of all Class IV AM stations to 1,000 watts. WERI still has to reduce power to 250 watts at night, as did all other stations on the same frequency. 1966 WERI adds F.M. service with WERI-FM/103.7 (Channel 279) (now WVEI-FM).
