WMMY
WMMY (106.1 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a country music format. Licensed to Jefferson, North Carolina, United States, the station broadcasts from studios on Blowing Rock Road in Boone, North Carolina and serves the counties of Watauga, Ashe, Avery, Alleghany, Wilkes, Catawba and Caldwell in northwestern North Carolina. The station is currently owned by Curtis Media Group. History Highland Communication Associates bought WATA from the Roland Potter family in the late 1980s and started WZJS. Aisling bought these stations in 2003; the same time as the company also purchased WECR, WECR-FM and WXIT. It was then that WZJS switched from a Country Music format to Contemporary Christian, thus allowing for WMMY to become the High Country's new FM country radio station. The station started out using the moniker, "My Country 106", but after several years, switched to using "Highway 106". WWMY (102.3 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a country music format, simulcasting WMMY 106.1 FM Jefferson, North Carolina. Licensed to Beech Mountain, North Carolina, United States, the station is currently owned by Curtis Media Group and features programming from CBS News Radio. History After buying WJTP in 1996, Steve Rondinaro's Rondinaro Broadcasting changed that station's call letters to WECR and started WECR-FM, along with buying WXIT. In 2003, the stations were sold to Aisling Broadcasting (Jonathon Hoffman, managing member) for $2.2 million. This added to Aisling's holdings since they had also purchased in September 2003 (from Highland Communications) WATA & WZJS for a price of $2.2 million, and WMMY (from Dale Hendrix) in 2004 for $1.58 million. WZJS (100.7 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a classic hits format. Licensed to Banner Elk, North Carolina, United States, it serves the Banner Elk area. The station is currently owned by Curtis Media Group. History WZJS was started in 1989 by Roland Potter. In the late 1990s the station, along with WATA, was sold to Highland Communication Associates. The station from then to its sale was known as "High Country 100.7" and was one of the most popular radio stations in Northwestern NC. WECR (1130 AM) is a radio station broadcasting an adult contemporary format. Licensed to Newland, NC, United States, it serves the Boone, NC area. The station is currently owned by Curtis Media Group. WECR broadcasts during the daytime only. History James T. Parker owned what was then called WJTP.
