WLMF-LD (channel 53) is a low-powered television station licensed to Miami, Florida. Founded in 1987 by Paging Systems, Inc., a company based in Burlingame, California, WLMF aired programs from the first channel of SCOLA, a service offering European television news and information. Currently, WLMF is owned by America CV Network as an affiliate of LATV. WLMF moved from channel 53 to channel 51 upon transitioning to digital broadcasting, and has an application for a low-powered digital service that would air on channel 39. Earlier attempts to move to channel 3 were dismissed. The move to channel 51 was required because channels 52 through 59 were discontinued as part of the 2009 digital television transition and sold off as blocks of UHF spectrum. WFUN-LD (channel 48) is a low-power Spanish-language independent television station in Miami, Florida, United States. It is owned by América CV Station Group, Inc., alongside fellow independent station WJAN-CD (channel 41). The two stations share studios in Hialeah Gardens; WFUN-LD's transmitter is located on West Hallandale Beach Boulevard in the Carver Ranches section of West Park. History The station's license application was first submitted to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 1980, but a construction permit was not issued until 1988, with a license issued the following year as W27AQ. WJAN-CD (channel 41) is a low-power, class A Spanish-language independent station licensed to Miami, Florida, United States. Owned by América CV Station Group, Inc., it is sister station to WFUN-LD (channel 48). The two stations share studios in Hialeah Gardens; WJAN-CD's transmitter is located due south of Aladdin City. On cable, WJAN-CD is available on Comcast Xfinity channel 12 in Miami-Dade County and channel 15 in Broward County in standard-definition television, and on channel 439 in high definition. SCOLA is a non-profit educational organization that receives and re-transmits television programming from more than 140 countries in more than 170 native languages. These programs are available via Internet, satellite, and cable TV systems. SCOLA content reaches more than 20 million viewers worldwide. The service currently has one over-the-air affiliate, Miami, Florida's WLMF-LD, carrying its first channel, offering news and programming from Europe. SCOLA also has 11 different web services that provide language training resources. History SCOLA was started by Rev. Leland Lubbers, a Jesuit priest, on the campus of Creighton University. Burlingame () is a city in San Mateo County, California. It is located on the San Francisco Peninsula and has a significant shoreline on San Francisco Bay. The city is named after diplomat Anson Burlingame and is known for its numerous eucalyptus groves, high quality of life, walkable downtown area, and public school system.
