WKYT-TV
WKYT-TV (channel 27) is a television station in Lexington, Kentucky, United States, affiliated with CBS and The CW. The station is owned by Gray Television, and maintains studios and transmitter facilities on Winchester Road (US 60) near I-75 on the east side of Lexington. In addition to WKYT-TV, Gray owns WYMT-TV (channel 57) in Hazard, Kentucky, a separate CBS affiliate serving eastern Kentucky with its own syndicated programming inventory and local newscasts. While the authorization to build channel 27 in Lexington was given in 1953, the original owner, radio station WLAP, opted to hold off on construction for economic reasons. When WLAP was sold in 1956, the construction permit was sold with it, and the new owners signed the station on as WKXP-TV in 1957. The Taft Broadcasting Company (also known as Taft Television and Radio Company, Incorporated) was an American media conglomerate based in Cincinnati, Ohio. The company was rooted in the Taft family, family of William Howard Taft, the 27th President of the United States. In 1879, William Howard's brother, Charles Phelps Taft, purchased two afternoon newspapers in Cincinnati, ''The Times'' and ''The Cincinnati Daily Star'', merging them into the ''The Cincinnati Times-Star, Cincinnati Times-Star'' in 1880. WYMT-TV (channel 57) is a television station licensed to Hazard, Kentucky, United States, serving as the CBS affiliate for the Eastern Kentucky Coalfield region. Owned by Gray Television, the station maintains studios on Black Gold Boulevard off the Kentucky Route 15, KY 15 bypass in Hazard, and its transmitter is located south of the city in Perry County, Kentucky, Perry County. Although identifying as a separate station in its own right, WYMT is actually considered a Broadcast relay station#Semi-satellites, semi-satellite of WKYT-TV (channel 27) in Lexington, Kentucky, Lexington. Founded in 1946 by James Harrison Gray as Gray Communications Systems, the company owns or operates 180 stations across the United States in 113 markets. WROV-TV, UHF Channel 27 in Roanoke, Virginia, was an early TV station in Roanoke and the second oldest (having signed on shortly after WSLS-TV). Established February 15, 1953, it left the air on July 13, 1953, becoming the first UHF television station in the United States to have ceased operations. WKRC (550 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station owned by iHeartMedia and licensed to Cincinnati, Ohio. Broadcasting under the branding of 55KRC, the station airs a talk radio format. The studios are on Montgomery Road in Cincinnati, and the transmitter is in Cold Spring, Kentucky. WKRC operates at 5,000 watts by day and 1,000 watts at night. Hulbert Taft (September 19, 1877 – January 19, 1959) was an American journalist, publisher, and member of the Taft family of Ohio. As editor, publisher, and later, chairman of the board of directors, of the ''Cincinnati Times-Star,'' Taft was an influential figure in local and national politics throughout the first half of the twentieth century. He was a grandson of Alphonso Taft, Secretary of War during the Grant administration; a nephew of President William Howard Taft; and cousin of Ohio Senator Robert A. Taft.
