WKNW (1400 AM) is a news/talk radio station serving Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. The station is the only dedicated privately owned news/talk station in the market, save for its tenure as an ESPN Radio affiliate from 2010-2022. According to past editions of the ''Broadcasting Yearbook'', the station went on the air as WKNW in August 1990, after briefly holding the callsigns WBPW and WDHP before launch. The station was popularly known as ''KNOW AM'' in the 1990s, which alluded to its news/talk format, and also served as an antonym (in name and frequency) to sister station WYSS' ''Yes FM'' branding. Originally owned by Algoma Broadcasting, WNKW operated as a news/talk station with live Fox Sports Radio coverage from its inception throughout later ownership changes to Marathon Media in 1998, and Northern Star Broadcasting in 2002. Michigan IMG Sports Network
The Michigan Wolverines Sports Network is an American radio network consisting of 46 radio stations which carry coverage of Michigan Wolverines football and men's basketball. WXYT-FM (97.1 FM) and WWJ (950 AM), both in Metro Detroit, serve as the network's flagship stations. The network also includes 44 affiliates in the U.S. states of Michigan and Ohio: 27 AM stations, four of which extend their signals with low-power FM translators; and 17 full-power FM stations ( Toledo generally only broadcasts Michigan content over its HD Radio digital subchannel). * * Games are also available on Sirius XM satellite radio and online via TuneIn. Northern Star Broadcasting
Northern Star Broadcasting (formerly known as Calibre Communications) was a radio broadcasting company which owned various radio stations in Michigan from 1998–2016, with offices in Cheboygan and Traverse City. Northern Star was owned by Reynolds Communications, ran by Del & Mary Reynolds. At one time or another, Northern Star Broadcasting owned eleven stations in Northern Michigan (nine as of 2016) and previously fourteen additional stations in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, exiting Upper Peninsula markets in 2010 & 2011 after selling all but one repeater station to new owners, largely Sovereign Communications of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan in February 2010. Despite the sales, Northern Star's stations in Cheboygan, Mackinaw City, and Indian River could still be heard in much of the Eastern Upper Peninsula. WSUE
WSUE (101.3 FM) is a radio station in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Currently owned by Sovereign Communications, the station broadcasts an album-oriented rock (AOR) format with the brand name Rock 101. WSUE features a similar brand identity and playlist as Sovereign Communications' other rock stations in the Upper Peninsula, WUPK in Marquette and WIMK in Iron Mountain, and since 2010, is the only FM rock radio station directly serving Michigan's Eastern Upper Peninsula and Ontario's Algoma District. WSUE launched in 1978 as a middle of the road station owned by the Miami County Broadcasting Company. The station was sold to Fabiano-Strickler Communications in 1981, who operated it as a country and later adult contemporary station until switching to its current album-oriented rock format in 1989.
