Sovereign Communications, LLC is an American radio broadcasting company which owns 17 radio stations in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, with offices in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The company is owned and operated by William C. Gleich and Tim Sabean. After their February 2010 purchase of 11 stations from Northern Star Broadcasting, the company holds "something close to a local monopoly" on radio stations in the Sault Ste. Marie region. The transaction was publicly valued at $3,425,000 in cash. Several Northern Star employees (both on-air and in management) lost their jobs as a result of the purchase. As well, 97.9 WIHC out of Newberry, Michigan went dark that same month after not being purchased from Northern Star in the deal, only returning two years later under new ownership. At present, Sovereign Communications owns every locally produced, non-simulcasted FM station in the Sault Ste. Radio Broadcasting
Radio broadcasting is transmission of audio (sound), sometimes with related metadata, by radio waves to radio receivers belonging to a public audience. WSUE
WSUE (101.3 FM broadcasting, FM) is a radio station in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Currently owned by Sovereign Communications, the station broadcasts an album-oriented rock (AOR) format with the brand name Rock 101. WSUE features a similar brand identity and playlist as Sovereign Communications' other rock stations in the Upper Peninsula, WUPK in Marquette and WIMK in Iron Mountain, and since 2010, is the only FM rock radio station directly serving Michigan's Eastern Upper Peninsula and Ontario's Algoma District. WSUE launched in 1978 as a middle of the road (music), middle of the road station owned by the Miami County Broadcasting Company. WNBY-FM (93.9 MHz, "Oldies 93") is a classic hits/oldies music formatted radio station licensed to Newberry, Michigan, and serving the Sault Ste. Marie market. The station is owned and operated by Sovereign Communications. The station shares a call sign and ownership history with Newberry AM station WNBY 1450, which broadcasts a classic country format. WNBY has operated on different frequencies over the years, starting at 93.5 FM, then 93.7 FM, and finally to its current frequency at 93.9 FM in 2004. WNBY (1450 AM) is a radio station licensed to Newberry, Michigan broadcasting a classic country format. The station has been owned by Sovereign Communications since 2004, and shares a call-sign and ownership history with sister station WNBY-FM (Oldies 93), also based out of Newberry. Launched by the Newberry Broadcasting Company in 1966 as the town's first radio station, WNBY-AM was broadcasting an adult contemporary & country format when both WNBY stations were purchased by Prime Time Productions in 1979.
