WIHC (97.9 FM broadcasting, FM) is an American radio station licensed to Newberry, Michigan to serve the city of license, city of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The station is owned by West Central Michigan Media Ministries, broadcasting a Christian radio, Christian talk radio format simulcasted from Cadillac, Michigan under the branding "Strong Tower Radio". History WIHC has operated under numerous owners and formats since its launch in December 1988 under the ownership of Leon Van Dam. Originally an easy listening station with the callsign WUPQ, the station was sold to Cambrian Broadcasting in 1995, who switched the station to a country music format under the branding "Hot Country 97.9", with its callsign changing to WIHC to match the new name and format. The station's license was transferred to Marathon Media in 1998, who ran the station until the fall of 2001, when WIHC was sold to Northern Star Broadcasting as part of a $7.95 million deal involving 10 other stations. Northern Star Broadcasting (formerly known as Calibre Communications) was a radio broadcasting company which owned various radio stations in Michigan from 1998–2016, with offices in Cheboygan, Michigan, Cheboygan and Traverse City, Michigan, Traverse City. Northern Star was owned by Reynolds Communications, ran by Del & Mary Reynolds. WGFN (98.1 MHz) is a radio station in Northern Michigan that airs a classic rock format under the branding of "The Bear", and is currently owned by Black Diamond Broadcast Holdings, LLC. WGFN is based out of Glen Arbor, Michigan, airing at 98.1 FM to the Traverse City market. WGFN has been the flagship station of the Bear network of classic rock stations that have aired in Northern Michigan since the early 2000s, which peaked with 4 regional stations from 2002-2009 and 2010-2012. Newberry, Michigan
Newberry is a village and county seat of Luce County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The village is located within McMillan Township and is the only incorporated community in Luce County. The population was 1,519 at the 2010 census. Newberry is surrounded by state and national forests and is considered the southern gateway to the Tahquamenon Falls area, which the other being Paradise to the northeast. Newberry was designated as "the Moose Capital of Michigan" by the state legislature. The Newberry Correctional Facility is located just south of the village. WYPV (94.5 FM) is a radio station based in Mackinaw City, Michigan, which airs an album oriented rock (AOR) format. Programming is simulcasted on 100.3 WQON in Grayling and 106.3 WWMN in Thompsonville. History The station's original call letters were WSSW (for the station's founder, Sonora S. Wray), which were first issued in October 1986. WSSW first signed on at 94.3 on September 6, 1989, with an automated MOR format, but went dark not long after that.
