WGFN
WGFN (98.1 MHz) is a radio station in Northern Michigan that airs a classic rock format under the branding of "The Bear", and is currently owned by Black Diamond Broadcast Holdings, LLC. WGFN is based out of Glen Arbor, Michigan, airing at 98.1 FM to the Traverse City market. WGFN has been the flagship station of the Bear network of classic rock stations that have aired in Northern Michigan since the early 2000s, which peaked with 4 regional stations from 2002-2009 and 2010-2012. The only other surviving Bear station in the region is 95.3 WWSS, which airs the same programming and playlist as WGFN, but features differing station identifications and commercial content for its market. WMKC (102.9 FM) is a radio station licensed to Indian River, Michigan. It airs a country music format called Big Country 102.9. The station is owned by Black Diamond Broadcast Holdings, LLC. History: A Dentist's Dream Beginnings WMKC ("MacKinaC"), owned by Mighty-Mac Broadcasting Corp., signed on in January 1982 by a Lansing dentist, Donald "Doc" Benson. Benson loved country music and wanted northern Michigan to have a WITL clone for when he traveled up north. He already owned an AM in St. Ignace, WIDG ("Widge By The (Mackinac) Bridge") 940. WIDG aired various formats, but usually was MOR. In December 1979 Doc Benson closed WIDG with a "dark" license until April 12, 1981. He had to bring WIDG-AM back on in order to continue the CP for WIDG-FM. Initially the station was to be WIDG-FM and be automated and be called "Big Country-102 FM." WGFM (105.1 FM) in Cheboygan, Michigan and is an American radio station that airs a mainstream rock format branded as Rock 105 & 95.5. WGFM boasts a 43,000-watt signal which easily covers most of northern Lower Michigan from Grayling northward and extends into the eastern Upper Peninsula. WGFE's signal serves primarily the immediate Traverse City area and carries across the waters of Lake Michigan, and can frequently be heard in Manitowoc, Wisconsin and the eastern shoreline of Door County, Wisconsin. Northern Star Broadcasting (formerly known as Calibre Communications) was a radio broadcasting company which owned various radio stations in Michigan from 1998–2016, with offices in Cheboygan, Michigan, Cheboygan and Traverse City, Michigan, Traverse City. Northern Star was owned by Reynolds Communications, ran by Del & Mary Reynolds. At one time or another, Northern Star Broadcasting owned eleven stations in Northern Michigan (nine as of 2016) and previously fourteen additional stations in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, exiting Upper Peninsula markets in 2010 & 2011 after selling all but one repeater station to new owners, largely Sovereign Communications of Sault Ste. WYPV (94.5 FM) is a radio station based in Mackinaw City, Michigan, which airs an album oriented rock (AOR) format. Programming is simulcasted on 100.3 WQON in Grayling and 106.3 WWMN in Thompsonville. History The station's original call letters were WSSW (for the station's founder, Sonora S. Wray), which were first issued in October 1986. WSSW first signed on at 94.3 on September 6, 1989, with an automated MOR format, but went dark not long after that. The station, while at 94.3, was a Class A station with an ERP of 3,000 watts, which made the station all but unlistenable outside of the Mackinaw City-St. Ignace area, a seasonal, tourist-driven market barely able to sustain the competing radio stations that were already on the air and firmly established. WWMK (106.3 FM) is a radio station licensed to serve the community of Onaway, Michigan. WWMK is imaged as "106.3 Mac FM". The station is owned by Black Diamond Broadcast Holdings, LLC. WUPS
WUPS (98.5 FM) is a 100 kW radio station licensed to Harrison, Michigan and serving central and northern Michigan, with its chief focus on the Mount Pleasant area. The station, previously owned by Sindy Fuller, through licensee Bridge to Bridge, Inc., was acquired by Black Diamond Broadcast Group, LLC in 2015 and broadcasts a classic hits format. Black Diamond's purchase of both WUPS and sister station WTWS was consummated on February 4, 2015 at a price of $1.65 million. The station signed on in 1961 to complement its sister station, WHGR/1290 (the callsign stood for Houghton Lake/ Grayling/Roscommon). WGFE (95.5 FM) is a radio station licensed to serve the community of Glen Arbor, Michigan. The station is owned by Black Diamond Broadcasting. The station airs an active rock format, simulcasting 105.1 WGFM in Cheboygan, Michigan. History In 1989, David C. Schaberg applied for a construction permit on 95.5 FM in Glen Arbor, and the station was known as WTHM. Schaberg sold the permit to Del Reynolds in 1997, where he changed the call letters to WJZJ. In 1997, the station was put on the air as a simulcast of WLJZ 94.5 in Mackinaw City, Michigan, which played a satellite-delivered smooth jazz format as "Coast FM". WCKC (107.1 FM, "The Drive") is a radio station in Cadillac, Michigan, owned by Up North Radio, LLC. WCKC airs a classic rock format. History In 1985 Donald "Doc" Benson, then-owner of WMKC-FM/WIDG-AM in St. Ignace, obtained the CP (Construction Permit) for a new FM in Cadillac at 107.1. Cadillac previously had a WITW (now WLXV) and Doc reportedly believed he could capitalize on the "good will" of the other station's calls and came up with WYTW. It was called Y-107 and ran satellite adult contemporary music for a short period, but the station was unable to make enough money to pay its expenses. In 1989 WYTW changed to WCKC ("Cadillac KC Country") and simulcast with WMKC and WIDG. WCBY (1240 AM and W264CF 100.7 FM) is a radio station in Cheboygan, Michigan, broadcasting a classic country format delivered by Westwood One "Big Country Gold" is the slogan, which plays off sister country FM WMKC 102.9 known as "Big Country - 102-9".
