WHHO (1320 AM) was a radio station broadcasting a sports talk format. Licensed to Hornell, New York, United States, the station served the Elmira- Corning area. The station was owned by Bilbat Radio, Inc. (at the time of closure, wholly owned by William Berry after the death of partner Bat Lyons). The station had been the home of Eric Massa's weekly radio broadcasts. Gene Burns, a Hornell native, began his long broadcasting career at the station. History In 1946, the W.H. Greenhow Co, owner of the '' Hornell Evening Tribune'', launched WWHG-FM 105.3 as Hornell's first radio station. The call letters WHG are the initials of the company. WLEA, a competitor owned by Canisteo Radio Corporation, came on the air on 1320 kHz at 1 KW Daytime as part of the post-World War II radio boom in 1946. WKPQ (105.3 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a country music format. Licensed to Hornell, New York, United States, the station serves the Elmira-Corning area including the Canisteo valley and northern Pennsylvania. The station is currently owned by Sound Communications, LLC. of Corning, NY. History The station signed on in 1946 as WWHG-FM, owned by the W.H. Greenhow Co who also owned the Hornell Tribune newspaper. In the era of AM radio it did not do well financially, so the mission became to procure an AM signal. In 1949 WWHG began operation on 1590 with 500 Watts. Very shortly thereafter, WLEA 1320 kHz went into bankruptcy and discontinued operations. A Pennsylvania radio station operator, Cary Simpson, purchased the equipment, most of which was used to sign on WFRM-AM Coudersport, PA. Hornell is a city in Steuben County, New York, United States. The population was 8,259 at the 2020 census. The city is named after the Hornell family, early settlers. The City of Hornell is surrounded by Town of Hornellsville. Hornell is about south of Rochester and is near the western edge of Steuben County. WQLE (960 AM) was the last official call sign of a now defunct radio station in Kane, Pennsylvania. History McKean County's first full-time radio station WQLE signed on as WADP on June 7, 1954, under the ownership of Northern Allegheny Broadcasting Company. Studios and offices were located inside the Penn-Kane Hotel, at the corner of Fraley and Greeves Streets in Kane. Transmitter facilities were located along Highland Road, outside of Kane. The construction permit to build the station was issued on February 24, 1954, which allowed the station to operate at the assigned frequency of 1590 kHz and at a daytime-only power of 500 watts. Gene Burns (December 3, 1940 – May 25, 2013) was an American talk radio host. He hosted ''Dining Around with Gene Burns'', a food wine and travel program, which aired Saturdays on NewsTalk 810 AM in San Francisco. He also hosted ''The Gene Burns Program'', a political and social commentary show, that aired on NewsTalk 810. He had previously broadcast both shows on KGO in San Francisco. On December 1, 2011, it was announced he was among the hosts cut by KGO as it shifted to more of a news format. Burns was scheduled to continue his shows on the radio station KKSF 910 AM on January 3, 2012. Instead, fill-in hosts took his place as he recovered from an unknown illness. On April 3, 2012, Burns disclosed on his KKSF blog that he was recovering from a stroke that had resulted in aphasia. WCBA (1350 AM) was a radio station in the Elmira-Corning market of New York state. It broadcast at 1,000 watts day and 37 watts night on 1350 kHz from studios in South Corning, New York. History The station signed on as Corning's second AM station prior to 1967, according to thobituaryfor John T. Horn, the longtime disc jockey known on the air as Jack Shane. Dean Slack bought the station in 1977 and persuaded Horn, who started his career at WCBA 10 years earlier and was then a top personality at WENY, to return. "Dean and Jack" hosted the morning show on the adult contemporary station for 12 years. In 1988, Slack signed WCBA-FM on the air, giving WCBA an FM presence in the market.
