WCBA (AM)
WCBA (1350 AM) was a radio station in the Elmira-Corning market of New York state. It broadcast at 1,000 watts day and 37 watts night on 1350 kHz from studios in South Corning, New York. History The station signed on as Corning's second AM station prior to 1967, according to thobituaryfor John T. Horn, the longtime disc jockey known on the air as Jack Shane. Dean Slack bought the station in 1977 and persuaded Horn, who started his career at WCBA 10 years earlier and was then a top personality at WENY, to return. "Dean and Jack" hosted the morning show on the adult contemporary station for 12 years. In 1988, Slack signed WCBA-FM on the air, giving WCBA an FM presence in the market. Kevin Olmstead was an independent professional wrestler and manager known as Vinnie Ferrari. He also was a candidate for president of the United States. A former radio personality in the Elmira-Corning, New York, market, he became a ring announcer for the United States Wrestling Federation after his station booked the USWF for a 1996 radio promotion. He discovered in the course of the promotion that friends H. C. Loc and Big Poppa Chill were training to be wrestlers. WKPQ (105.3 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a country music format. Licensed to Hornell, New York, United States, the station serves the Elmira-Corning area including the Canisteo valley and northern Pennsylvania. The station is currently owned by Sound Communications, LLC. of Corning, NY. History The station signed on in 1946 as WWHG-FM, owned by the W.H. Greenhow Co who also owned the Hornell Tribune newspaper. In the era of AM radio it did not do well financially, so the mission became to procure an AM signal. In 1949 WWHG began operation on 1590 with 500 Watts. Very shortly thereafter, WLEA 1320 kHz went into bankruptcy and discontinued operations. A Pennsylvania radio station operator, Cary Simpson, purchased the equipment, most of which was used to sign on WFRM-AM Coudersport, PA. The station was owned by Bilbat Radio, Inc. (at the time of closure, wholly owned by William Berry after the death of partner Bat Lyons). The station had been the home of Eric Massa's weekly radio broadcasts. Gene Burns, a Hornell native, began his long broadcasting career at the station. History In 1946, the W.H.
