WWKZ (103.9 FM, KZ 103), is a top 40 (CHR) radio station licensed to Okolona, Mississippi, and is owned by iHeartMedia, Inc., through licensee iHM Licenses, LLC. WWKZ serves Tupelo and Northeast Mississippi with an ERP of 50,000 watts. History WWKZ began broadcasting in 1983 on 103.5 FM and was there until June 1998, when the license was moved to Como to serve the Memphis market as WRBO. WWKZ's owners then moved the Top 40 format to 105.3 WWZQ-FM, and the station became "KZ105". After the frequency change, WWKZ did not have the coverage area it once had, it remained at 105.3 FM until about mid-2005 when WWKZ and WACR (103.9 now at 105.3) swapped frequencies. WTUP (1490 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a black-oriented news format, with programming from the Black Information Network. Licensed to Tupelo, Mississippi, United States, the station serves the Tupelo area. The station is owned by iHeartMedia, Inc., through licensee iHM Licenses, LLC. History WTUP was the second broadcast radio station in Tupelo, Mississippi (the first was WELO). The station signed on as a full-service AM providing music, news and weather for Tupelo. WTUP originally broadcast with 1,000 watts at 1380 on the dial, only during the daytime. About 1959, when WELO vacated 1490 to switch to 580, WTUP switched to the 1490, in order to broadcast 24 hours. Urban contemporary music, also known as urban music, hip hop, urban pop, or just simply urban, is a music radio format. The term was coined by New York radio DJ Frankie Crocker in the early to mid-1970s as a synonym for Black music. Urban contemporary radio stations feature a playlist made up entirely of Black genres such as R&B, pop-rap, quiet storm, urban adult contemporary, hip hop, Latin music such as Latin pop, Chicano R&B and Chicano rap, and Caribbean music such as reggae and soca. Guntown, Mississippi
Guntown is a city in Lee County, Mississippi, located in the northern part of the Tupelo micropolitan area. The population was 2,410 at the 2020 Census. Etymology Guntown is named for Virginia Loyalist ''émigré'' James G. Gunn ( d. 1826) who found asylum among the Chickasaws in present-day Lee County. History Union cavalry officers described Guntown as "a station and small village on the Mobile & Ohio road." The U.S. post office was established on April 13, 1866, marking the official launch of the service in Guntown. This was followed by incorporation on February 16, 1867, and appointment of the first mayor that year. Geography Guntown is located along Mississippi Highway 145, with the older parts of the city lying further to the east near the railroad tracks.
