WBAW-FM
WBAW-FM (99.1 FM) was a radio station which most recently broadcast a gospel music format as "Praise 99.1". Licensed to Barnwell, South Carolina, United States, the station was owned by Bullie Broadcasting Corporation. WBAW-FM was established in 1966. It was acquired by its final owners in 1998; a move to Pembroke, Georgia, on 99.3 MHz was approved in the early 2000s but never occurred, and after the death of the principal owner of Bullie Broadcasting, the station entered into financial difficulties and closed in 2016. History WBAW-FM went on the air August 31, 1966, on 101.7 MHz; it was co-owned with WBAW (740 AM), the daytime-only station in Barnwell, and simulcast some of its programs. During the 1980s, the station had urban contemporary music on nights and weekends; the DJ, Henry Louis Wallace, was later convicted for ten murders in Charlotte, North Carolina. WBAW, last using the call sign WBUB, was a radio station on 740 kHz AM licensed to Barnwell, South Carolina, United States. It was last owned by Clear Channel Communications. The studios and transmitter were located on US 278 on the southern edge of Barnwell. History On October 15, 1952, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted a construction permit for a new daytime-only radio station on 740 kHz to serve Barnwell to Blue Ridge Broadcasting Company, Inc. Broadcasts began less than a year later, on October 12, 1953. Six months after signing on, WBAW earned one of the highest distinctions in station history when it received a Peabody Award for its public service programming, particularly its ''Church of Your Choice'' series. Barnwell is a city in and county seat of Barnwell County, South Carolina, United States, located along U.S. Route 278. The population was 4,750 at the 2010 census. Geography Barnwell is located east of the center of Barnwell County at (33.244534, -81.363214). Turkey Creek, a tributary of the Salkehatchie River, runs through the city just west of the downtown, and includes a small impoundment known as Lake Brown in the north part of the city. U.S. Route 278 passes through the city, leading south to Allendale and northwest to Augusta, Georgia. State highways 3, 70, 64 also pass through the city; SC 64 leads west to the east entrance of the Savannah River Site, which is a nuclear reservation.
