WBAW (AM)
WBAW, last using the call sign WBUB, was a radio station on 740 kHz AM licensed to Barnwell, South Carolina, United States. It was last owned by Clear Channel Communications. The studios and transmitter were located on US 278 on the southern edge of Barnwell. History On October 15, 1952, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted a construction permit for a new daytime-only radio station on 740 kHz to serve Barnwell to Blue Ridge Broadcasting Company, Inc. Broadcasts began less than a year later, on October 12, 1953. Six months after signing on, WBAW earned one of the highest distinctions in station history when it received a Peabody Award for its public service programming, particularly its ''Church of Your Choice'' series. In 1956, the 500-watt station was sold to Radio WBAW, Inc. The new owners, who spent $45,000, were Virginia and J. A. Gallimore and Joseph B. Wilder. Barnwell, South Carolina
Barnwell is a city in and county seat of Barnwell County, South Carolina, United States, located along U.S. Route 278. The population was 4,750 at the 2010 census. Geography Barnwell is located east of the center of Barnwell County at (33.244534, -81.363214). Turkey Creek, a tributary of the Salkehatchie River, runs through the city just west of the downtown, and includes a small impoundment known as Lake Brown in the north part of the city. U.S. Route 278 passes through the city, leading south to Allendale and northwest to Augusta, Georgia. State highways 3, 70, 64 also pass through the city; SC 64 leads west to the east entrance of the Savannah River Site, which is a nuclear reservation. Jacor Communications was a media corporation, existing between 1987 and 1999, which owned many radio stations in the United States. In 1998, Jacor was purchased by Clear Channel Communications, now iHeartMedia, for $2.8 billion. Jacor Communications began with three religious stations and went on to acquire dozens of radio stations between 1992 and its sale to Clear Channel in 1999. It also owned a few television stations, including WKRC-TV in Cincinnati. History Jacor Communications was founded by Terry Jacobs. Jacobs incorporated Jacor Communications in 1979 and purchased three religious stations in 1981.
