WAVM (91.7 FM) is a high school radio station broadcasting from Maynard High School in Maynard, Massachusetts. Station programming provides the local area with news and church service broadcasts among other types of programming. Founded in 1973, WAVM has aided the careers of several of the school's successful alumni. Controversy Long-time faculty administrator and station founder, teacher Joseph Magno, was arrested and charged with sexual assault in January 2006. Magno died in January 2007 of an apparent heart attack, just before his trial could begin. FCC licensing of frequency 91.7 For several years WAVM petitioned the Federal Communications Commission to increase the power of its signal from 10 watts to 500 watts. High school radio are radio stations located at high schools and usually operated by its students with faculty supervision. The oldest extant high school AM radio station is AM 1450 KBPS in Portland, Oregon. Portland radio station KBPS, first licensed in 1923, is the second oldest radio station overall in the city of Portland. The student body of Benson Polytechnic High School purchased the transmitter and other equipment from Stubbs Electric in Portland for $1,800. Money for the purchase of the station came from student body funds. On March 23, 1923, the student body of Benson was licensed by the federal government to operate a radio station using 200 watts of power at 834 kilocycles. The first call letters of the station were KFIF. The station made its formal debut on the air and was officially dedicated in early May of 1923, between the hours of 9:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., on the opening night of the 5th annual Benson Tech Show. Maynard High School (Massachusetts)
Maynard High School is the only public high school in Maynard, Massachusetts, United States. The 2015–16 enrollment is 485 students for grades 9 through 12. A new high school building opened for the 2013–14 school year. The high school contained the eighth grade when the new building opened. In fall of 2017, the eighth grade moved back to Fowler Middle School. The high school was one of only three schools in Massachusetts awarded Leader Status by the Collaborative for High Performance Schools for being a green building. The school has a 13:1 student teacher ratio. The school mascot is the tiger. The High School's campus is adjacent to the Green Meadow School and Fowler School. WUMB-FM (91.9 FM) in Boston, Massachusetts, is the radio station of the University of Massachusetts Boston. It broadcasts an Americana/Blues/Roots/Folk mix hosted by its staff weekdays. Maynard is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The town is located 22 miles west of Boston, in the MetroWest and Greater Boston region of Massachusetts and borders Acton, Concord, Stow and Sudbury. The town's population was 10,746 as of the 2020 United States Census. Maynard is located on the Assabet River, a tributary of the Concord River.
