Lygaeidae
The Lygaeidae are a family in the Hemiptera (true bugs), with more than 110 genera in four subfamilies. The family is commonly referred to as seed bugs, and less commonly, milkweed bugs, or ground bugs. However, while many of the species feed on seeds, some feed on sap ( mucivory) or seed pods, others are omnivores and a few, such as the wekiu bug, are carnivores that feed exclusively on insects. Insects in this family are distributed across the world, including throughout North America. The family was vastly larger, but numerous former subfamilies have been removed and given independent family status, including the Artheneidae, Blissidae, Cryptorhamphidae, Cymidae, Geocoridae, Heterogastridae, Ninidae, Oxycarenidae and Rhyparochromidae, which together constituted well over half of the former family. The bizarre and mysterious beetle-like Psamminae were formerly often placed in the Piesmatidae, but this is almost certainly incorrect. Their true affiliations, however, are not en ...

Nysius
''Nysius'' is a genus of false chinch bugs in the family Lygaeidae. At least 100 described species are placed in ''Nysius''. Like other seed bugs, some species in the genus have proven to be crop pests of wheat and other grains (including ''N. huttoni''), as well as many vegetables. A unique Hawaiian radiation of the genus contains almost a quarter of the world's species (26), as well as the most diverse character set seen in the genus. In addition, two closely related species (colloquially known as wēkiu bugs) found on Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea on the island of Hawai'i, are different from the rest of ''Nysius'' by exhibiting reduced nonfunctional wings, and feed on dead and dying insects ('' N. wekiuicola'', '' N. aa'' ). Species The genus contains the following species: * '' Nysius aa'' Polhemus, 1998 * '' Nysius abnormis'' Usinger, 1942 * '' Nysius albipennis'' Distant, W.L., 1913 * '' Nysius angustatus'' Uhler, 1872 * '' Nysius angustellus'' (Blanchard, 1852) * '' Nys ...

Mauna Loa
Mauna Loa ( or ; Hawaiian: ; en, Long Mountain) is one of five volcanoes that form the Island of Hawaii in the U.S. state of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. The largest subaerial volcano (as opposed to subaqueous volcanoes) in both mass and volume, Mauna Loa has historically been considered the largest volcano on Earth, dwarfed only by Tamu Massif. It is an active shield volcano with relatively gentle slopes, with a volume estimated at , although its peak is about lower than that of its neighbor, Mauna Kea. Lava eruptions from Mauna Loa are silica-poor and very fluid, and tend to be non-explosive. Mauna Loa has probably been erupting for at least 700,000 years, and may have emerged above sea level about 400,000 years ago. The oldest-known dated rocks are not older than 200,000 years. The volcano's magma comes from the Hawaii hotspot, which has been responsible for the creation of the Hawaiian island chain over tens of millions of years. The slow drift of ...

Nysius Wekiuicola
''Nysius wekiuicola'' is a species of wēkiu bug (a type of seed bug in the genus ''Nysius'') endemic to the area surrounding the summit of Mauna Kea, on the island of Hawaii. It is closely related to ''Nysius aa'', which is endemic to the summit of the neighboring Mauna Loa. Description The wēkiu bug is flightless and inhabits the summit area of Mauna Kea, over . It is named after ''Puu Wēkiu'', which means "topmost hill" in the Hawaiian language, the summit peak of Mauna Kea. Ecology The summit of Mauna Kea is a bleak, cold, apparently lifeless place with cinder cones on a plateau of lava, but a number of organisms have adapted to the inhospitable environment. These include lichens, algae, mosses, insects, spiders, and other small arthropods. At least 12 species of endemic arthropods live there, and the community is largely dependent on the wind-blown insects that are deposited there. Unlike most other lygaeids, which eat seeds, the wēkiu bug has adapted to feed on ...

Mauna Kea
Mauna Kea ( or ; ; abbreviation for ''Mauna a Wākea''); is a dormant volcano on the island of Hawaii. Its peak is above sea level, making it the highest point in the state of Hawaii and second-highest peak of an island on Earth. The peak is about higher than Mauna Loa, its more massive neighbor. Mauna Kea is unusually topographically prominent for its height: its wet prominence is fifteenth in the world among mountains, at ; its dry prominence of is second in the world, only after Mount Everest This dry prominence is greater than Mount Everest's height above sea level of , and some authorities have labelled Mauna Kea the tallest mountain in the world, from its underwater base. It is about one million years old and thus passed the most active shield stage of life hundreds of thousands of years ago. In its current post-shield state, its lava is more viscous, resulting in a steeper profile. Late volcanism has also given it a much rougher appearance than its neighboring v ...

Insect Common Names
Insects (from Latin ') are pancrustacean Hexapoda, hexapod invertebrates of the class (biology), class Insecta. They are the largest group within the arthropod phylum. Insects have a chitinous exoskeleton, a three-part body (head, Thorax (insect anatomy), thorax and abdomen (insect anatomy), abdomen), three pairs of jointed Arthropod leg, legs, compound eyes and one pair of antenna (biology), antennae. Their blood is not totally contained in vessels; some circulates in an open cavity known as the haemocoel. Insects are the most diverse group of animals; they include more than a million described species and represent more than half of all known living organisms. The total number of Extant taxon, extant species is estimated at between six and ten million; In: potentially over 90% of the animal life forms on Earth are insects. Insects may be found in nearly all Natural environment, environments, although only a small number of species reside in the oceans, which are dominated by ...
