Wunghnu
Wunghnu ( ) is a town in the Goulburn Valley region of northern Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the Shire of Moira local government area, north of the state capital, Melbourne. The local railway station was opened on the Goulburn Valley railway in 1881, but does not see any passenger services, being the site of a siding and grain silos. Wunghnu Post Office opened earlier on 6 July 1877. Wunghnu is situated on the Goulburn Valley Highway (Carlisle Street) and the Nine Mile Creek runs through the town at the north end. Wunghnu Primary School is located on the west side of the highway near the creek. The 1u cafe (recently re-opened in May 2012) is also located at the north end of town on the east side of the highway opposite the water tower and Graham Park and local public toilets are located near the creek. The Picola & District Football Netball League is an Australian rules football and netball league affiliated with the AFL Victoria Country. The league covers a large area of northern Victoria, Australia, Victoria and southern New South Wales from Shepparton, Victoria, Shepparton in the south to Jerilderie, New South Wales, Jerilderie in the north and consists of teams from the smaller communities and towns. Wunghnu Football Club
The Wunghnu Football Club, nicknamed the Magpies, was an Australian rules football club in the small Goulburn Valley town of Wunghnu, Victoria, Australia. History It was playing in the Picola & District Football League until it was forced in 2011 into recess by the VCFL because they were deemed to be uncompetitive. The club was based in the small Victorian town of Wunghnu, which is approximately 200 km north of Melbourne. Wunghnu played from 1888 to 1930 in the Goulburn Valley Football Association, a forerunner to the Murray Football League. From 1924 to 1928, the Wunghnu and Drumanure Football Clubs merged to form the Drumanure-Wunghnu side. Wunghnu played in some of the minor competitions around Shepparton until it joined the Picola & District Football League in 1951. Numurkah, Victoria
Numurkah ( ) is a town in Victoria, Australia, located on the Goulburn Valley Highway, north of Shepparton, in the Shire of Moira. At the , Numurkah had a population of 4,768. History The area was occupied by the Yorta Yorta people prior to European settlement. Squatters moved into the area from NSW in the late 1830s. After the pastoral runs were made available for farm selection, the township of Numurkah was surveyed in 1875, the Post Office opening 2 November 1878. The local railway station was opened on the Goulburn Valley railway in 1881, but has not seen any passenger services since 1993 when the train to Cobram was withdrawn. The station building remains in private ownership, and a footbridge crosses the line. Numurkah became the headquarters of the Murray Valley Soldier Settlement Area - one of the largest soldier settlements in Australia - after World War I. Moira Shire Council is a Local Government Area in the Northern Victoria Region of Victoria, Australia. Located in the north-east part of the state, it covers an area of . As at June 2021 the population was 30,018. It includes the towns of Cobram, Nathalia, Numurkah, Tungamah and Yarrawonga. It was formed in 1994 from the amalgamation of the Shire of Cobram, Shire of Nathalia, Shire of Numurkah, and parts of the Shire of Tungamah and Shire of Yarrawonga. The electoral district of Shepparton is a rural Lower House electoral district of the Victorian Parliament. It is located within the Northern Victoria Region of the Legislative Council. The electoral district of Shepparton covers an area of 3,289 square kilometres. The Tocumwal railway line (also known as the Shepparton line) is a gauge railway line in Victoria, Australia. The line runs between the border town of Tocumwal in New South Wales to Southern Cross, Melbourne. The line is utilised by various passenger and freight trains serving the northern suburbs of Melbourne and northern regions of Victoria. History The Melbourne and Essendon Railway Company opened the first section of the Tocumwal railway line from North Melbourne to Essendon in 1860. Following its take over by the Victorian Government in 1867, the line was extended to Tallarook and Mangalore in 1872. A line was built from Mangalore to Toolamba and Shepparton in 1880 and extended to Numurkah in 1881, Strathmerton in 1905 and connecting with the New South Wales Government Railways at Tocumwal at a break-of-gauge in 1908.
