Wrocław's Dwarfs
Wrocław’s gnomes ( pl, krasnale) are small figurines (20-30 cm) that first appeared in the streets of Wrocław, Poland in 2005. Since then, their numbers have been continually growing, and today they are considered a tourist attraction: those who would like to combine sight-seeing in Wrocław with "Hunting for dwarfs" are offered special brochures with a map and mobile application software for smartphones. In April 2019, there were already 600 dwarfs in the city. Six are located outside the city at the LG plant in Biskupice Podgórne. History In 2001, to commemorate the Orange Alternative (Polish anti-communist movement), a monument of a gnome (the movement’s symbol) was officially placed on Świdnicka Street, where the group’s gatherings used to take place. Market Square, Wrocław
The Market Square, Wrocław ( pl, Rynek we Wrocławiu, german: Großer Ring zu Breslau) is a medieval market square in Wrocław, in southwestern Poland. The square is rectangular with the dimensions and now serves as a pedestrian zone. It is one of the largest market squares in Europe, with the largest two city halls in the country. The buildings around the square are built according to different styles: the middle part (German: ''Tritt'') of the ring is occupied by a block of buildings consisting of the Old City Hall, the New City Hall as well as numerous citizens' houses. Krasnoludek
Krasnoludek or krasnal is the Polish name for a mythological type of gnome or dwarf, common in many Polish and translated folk tales (for example, Brothers Grimm ''Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'' is translated into the Polish language as ''Królewna Śnieżka i siedmiu krasnoludków''). They resemble small humans and wear pointy red hats. Due to the popularization of fantasy literature, they are now differentiated from both gnomes (Polish: ''gnom'') and dwarfs (Polish: ''krasnolud''), both of which are used in fantasy literature context, while the word ''krasnoludek'' still remains mostly the domain of older folk tales. The Orange Alternative (Polish language, Polish: ''Pomarańczowa Alternatywa'') is a Polish far-left anti-communist underground movement, started in Wrocław, a city in south-west Poland and led by Waldemar Fydrych (sometimes misspelled as Frydrych), commonly known as ''Major (Commander of Festung Breslau)'' in the 1980s.
