Wrexham Victoria F.C.
Wrexham Victoria F.C. were a Welsh football club based in Wrexham, Wales. History Formed on Tuesday 18 August 1899 in the Bowling Green Pub, taking their name from an older club with the same name. Wrexham Victoria's first game was a 5–4 defeat against Newton Rangers, on Saturday 2 September 1899, in the Chester and District League, whilst their first victory was a 3–2 win over Tarporley on 16 September 1899. Wrexham Victoria won the Football Association of Wales Trophy four times in 1890–91, 1900–01, 1901–02 and 1903–04. They joined The Combination for the 1906–07 season, however they finished bottom of the league. They were to be found playing in Division One of the Wrexham and District League for 1907–08. The Wrexham Victoria name did make a return in the 1920s. They appear in the second round draw of the Welsh Amateur Cup in 1923–24 against Wrexham Civil Service. Wrexham
Wrexham ( ; cy, Wrecsam; ) is a city and the administrative centre of Wrexham County Borough in Wales. It is located between the Welsh mountains and the lower Dee Valley, near the border with Cheshire in England. Historically in the county of Denbighshire, and later the county of Clwyd in 1974, it has been the principal settlement of Wrexham County Borough since 1996. Wrexham has historically been one of the primary settlements of Wales. At the 2011 Census, it had an urban population of 61,603 as part of the wider Wrexham built-up area which made it Wales's fourth largest urban conurbation and the largest in north Wales. The city comprises the local government communities of Acton, Caia Park, Offa and Rhosddu. Tom Burke (footballer, Born 1862)
Thomas Burke (1863–1914) was a Welsh international footballer who played for Wrexham Olympic and Newton Heath LYR. Burke won a total of eight caps for Wales, playing at half-back. Burke began his career with Wrexham Grosvenor, but moved on to Wrexham February and Wrexham Olympic before making a transfer to Liverpool Cambrians. From there, he was signed by Newton Heath in 1886. The club's parent company, the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, was able to employ Burke as a painter – as was his trade – at the nearby Carriage and Wagon Works, from which the club had been born. In his first season at Newton Heath, Burke played mostly at left-half, but switched to right-half by the following season, and even played at centre-half or inside-right on occasion. When Burke's time at Newton Heath came to an end, after making 29 appearances for the Heathens, he moved back to Wrexham to play for Wrexham Victoria.
