Wrexham County Borough Council
Wrexham County Borough Council () is the governing body for Wrexham County Borough, a Principal area of Wales, principal area in North Wales, north Wales, covering Wrexham and the surrounding area. History Elections take place every five years. The Welsh Labour Party, Labour Party held power on the council after the 2012 election, but lost it after splitting because of an internal row. Several Labour councillors became independent, allowing the Independent (politician), Independent group to take control in alliance with the Welsh Conservative Party, Conservatives. At the 2017 Wrexham County Borough Council election, 2017 election, the independents retained their dominance. A coalition of the Independent group, the Wrexham Independents group and the Conservatives agreed to run the council for the next 5 years to 2022. Clwyd County Council
Clwyd County Council ( cy, Cyngor Sir Clwyd) was the county council of the non-metropolitan county of Clwyd in north-east Wales, from its creation in 1974 to its abolition in 1996. It came into its powers on 1 April 1974. The county council was based at the Shire Hall in Mold. On 1 April 1996, under the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994, Clwyd County Council was broken up and replaced with the following authorities: Flintshire, Wrexham County Borough, Denbighshire and parts of Conwy. Political control The first election to the county council was held in 1973, initially operating as a shadow authority alongside the outgoing authorities until it came into its powers on 1 April 1974. Forward Wales
Forward Wales ( cy, Cymru Ymlaen) was a socialist political party operating in Wales. It evolved from the John Marek Independent Party (JMIP), formed by the ex-Labour member of the Welsh Assembly, John Marek who was the party's national convenor. On 8 November 2003, the JMIP decided to rename itself Forward Wales. The party sought to advance socialist policies for Wales as an alternative to what it perceived as a Labour Party which had moved away from socialism. Aled Roberts
Aled Roberts (17 May 1962 – 13 February 2022) was a Welsh Liberal Democrat politician from Rhosllanerchrugog, Wrexham. Roberts was a Member of the Welsh Assembly (AM) for the North Wales Region from 2011 to 2016. Before his election to the Assembly, he was a Councillor and the leader of Wrexham County Borough Council. He served as the Welsh Language Commissioner from 2019 until his death in 2022. Early life Roberts graduated with a law degree at the University of Aberystwyth in 1983. He later went on to practice as a solicitor. In 1985 he was part of a campaign to protect a local Miners' institute from closure. He later stopped practicing law when he was elected as the leader of Wrexham County Borough Council. 2017 Wrexham County Borough Council Election
The 2017 Wrexham County Borough Council election took place on 4 May 2017 to elect members of Wrexham County Borough Council in Wales. This was on the same day as other 2017 United Kingdom local elections. The previous all-council election took place in May 2012. Background The Labour Party held power on the council after the 2012 election, but lost it after splitting because of an internal row.
