Wrestling In Armenia
Wrestling ( hy, ըմբշամարտ, ) has deep historical roots in Armenia. Wrestling was practiced in the Armenian Highlands since ancient times. Armenians have their own variant of the sport called Kokh. It was recorded that King Tiridates III of Armenia won the Ancient Olympic Games in wrestling in 281 AD. During the Soviet era, wrestling became one of the most practiced sports in Armenia and remained popular after Armenia's independence in 1991. Armenian athletes have been successful at international competitions in the last two decades. Many have become World and European champions, both in Greco-Roman and Freestyle wrestling. Over half of the fifteen Armenian Olympic medalists and the two gold medal winners have been wrestlers. The sport is overseen by the Wrestling Federation of Armenia. Wrestling is a series of combat sports involving grappling-type techniques such as clinch fighting, throws and takedowns, joint locks, pins and other grappling holds. ''Golos Armenii'' (russian: Голос Армении, "Voice of Armenia"), previously known as ''Kommunist'' («Коммунист», " heCommunist"), is a Russian language newspaper published in Yerevan, Armenia. Armen Nazaryan
Armen Nazaryan ( hy, Արմեն Նազարյան, bg, Армен Назарян, born 9 March 1974) is an Armenian Greco-Roman wrestler who later represented Bulgaria. Nazaryan is a two-time Olympic Champion (1996, 2000), a three-time World Champion (2002, 2003, 2005), and a six-time European Champion (1994, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003). After Armenia regained independence in 1991, Nazaryan became the first Olympic gold medalist for the country. He was recognized by the FILA as the best wrestler of the year in 1998 and 2003. Freestyle Wrestling
Freestyle wrestling is a style of wrestling originated from Great Britain and the United States. Along with Greco-Roman, it is one of the two styles of wrestling contested in the Olympic Games. American high school and men's college wrestling is conducted under different rules and is termed scholastic and collegiate wrestling. American collegiate women's wrestling is conducted under freestyle rules. Freestyle wrestling, like collegiate wrestling, has its greatest origins in catch-as-catch-can wrestling. In both styles the ultimate goal is to throw and pin the opponent to the mat, which results in an immediate win. Mnatsakan Iskandaryan ( hy, Մնացական Իսկանդարյան, russian: Мнацакан Фрунзевич Искандарян, born 17 May 1967) is a former Armenian Greco-Roman wrestler who competed for the Soviet Union and Russia. Iskandaryan is an Olympic Champion, three-time World Champion, and two-time European Champion. He earned the rank Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR in 1991 and was named Honoured Coach of Russia in 2000. Levon Julfalakyan ( hy, Լեւոն Ջուլֆալակյան, born 5 April 1964) is a former Soviet Armenian Greco-Roman wrestler. He is an Olympic, World, and European Champion and was merited Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR in 1988. Julfalakyan is the current head coach of the Armenian national Greco-Roman wrestling team and President of the Union of Armenian Olympians, as well as a member of the Executive Committee of the NOC. Benur Pashayan ( hy, Բենուր Փաշայան; 13 February 1959 – 13 December 2019) was a Soviet Armenian Greco-Roman wrestler. He was a two-time World, European, and Soviet Champion. Pashayan also won a gold medal at the 1984 Friendship Games during the Olympic boycott. Norayr Musheghian
Norayr Musheghian ( hy, Նորայր Մուշեղյան; 2 November 1935 – 23 December 2011) was an Armenian wrestler, coach and public activist. Biography Norayr Musheghian was born on 2 November 1935 in Yerevan to Armenian parents, survivors of Armenian genocide from Mush and Sebastia who arrived in Yerevan as orphan children. The first sport Musheghian took up was gymnastics, but due to injury he was forced to abandon it. He began wrestling in 1952 under the coaching of Artashes Nazaryan. Initially, he could not choose between freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, but ultimately chose to specialize in freestyle wrestling. Sanasar Oganisyan ( hy, Սանասար Հովհաննիսյան, born 5 February 1960) is a former Soviet Armenian Freestyle wrestler and Olympic, World and European Champion. He became an Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR in 1980. Early life Oganisyan was born on February 5, 1960, in Moscow, Russian SFSR.
