Wrestling At The 1960 Summer Olympics – Men's Freestyle Light Heavyweight
The men's freestyle light heavyweight competition at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome took place from 1 to 6 September at the Basilica of Maxentius. Nations were limited to one competitor. Competition format This freestyle wrestling competition continued to use the "bad points" elimination system introduced at the 1928 Summer Olympics for Greco-Roman and at the 1932 Summer Olympics for freestyle wrestling, though adjusted the point values slightly. Wins by fall continued to be worth 0 points and wins by decision continued to be worth 1 point. Losses by fall, however, were now worth 4 points (up from 3). Losses by decision were worth 3 points (consistent with most prior years, though in some losses by split decision had been worth only 2 points). Ties were now allowed, worth 2 points for each wrestler. The elimination threshold was also increased from 5 points to 6 points. Dan Brand
Daniel Oliver "Dan" Brand (August 4, 1935 – February 10, 2015) was an American wrestler. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he was an All-America selection in 1958. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Member in 2011. Brand won a bronze medal in freestyle wrestling (middleweight class) at the 1964 Summer Olympics, which were held in Tokyo. On the way to his medal, he defeated Theuni Van Wyk of the Netherlands, Tasuo Sasaki of Japan, and Faiz Muhammad of Pakistan. He lost his final match to Hasan Güngör of Turkey, who won the silver medal. Before the 1964 Olympics, Brand had won four straight titles in freestyle wrestling at the Amateur Athletic Union National Championships, along with three straight titles in Greco-Roman wrestling. Gerry Martina (5 February 1928 – 3 April 1990) was a Dublin member of the 1956 and 1960 Irish Olympic wrestling teams, finishing a notable 4th in the Men's Light-Heavyweight Freestyle category in 1956 in Melbourne, Australia.
