Wortendyke, New Jersey
Wortendyke is a residential and commercial unincorporated community located within Midland Park, in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. History Wortendyke was established in 1796, originally named "Newtown", and then "Godwinville". A Methodist church was organized in 1805. A cotton mill was opened in 1812 by Cornelius Wortendyke. In 1875, his grandson, Cornelius A. Wortendyke, oversaw an extensive enlargement to the mill, as well as the addition of the largest silk mill in New Jersey. The mills were located along Goffle Brook, and employed more than 500 people, many of them immigrants from the Netherlands. The cost of the workers' transportation to the United States, as well as their housing costs, was deducted from their pay. By the early 1880s, Wortendyke had the largest school in the Township, and a population of 300. When the New Jersey Midland Railway was built in the 1880s, Cornelius A. The New Jersey Midland Railway was a 19th-century predecessor to the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway (NYS&W) that operated in Northern New Jersey and Orange County, New York. Formation and construction The New Jersey Midland Railway can trace its roots back to the failed New Jersey, Hudson & Delaware Railroad (NJH&D), chartered in 1832 to connect industrial Paterson, New Jersey, east to the ports along the Hudson Waterfront opposite New York City at Hoboken and west to Pennsylvania at the Delaware Water Gap. Though the company did not construct any track, the charter remained active until 1870, and the company cleared a right of way from Sandyston to New York. Goffle Brook
Goffle Brook is a tributary of the Passaic River which flows south through a section of Passaic County and Bergen County in New Jersey and drains the eastern side of the First Watchung Mountain. Heading up the brook from the confluence with the Passaic River, one encounters the borough of Hawthorne, the village of Ridgewood, the borough of Midland Park, and the township of Wyckoff. History Goffle Brook has seen human occupation for hundreds of years, as evidenced by abundant Lenape camp sites along its banks. Two such camps are known to have existed near the brook’s mouth, while another two existed about one and a half miles upstream on the east bank. Wortendyke (NYS&W Station)
Wortendyke is a former commuter railroad train station in the borough of Midland Park, Bergen County, New Jersey. The station serviced passenger and freight trains of the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway between Pavonia Terminal in Jersey City and Butler station until December 12, 1958, when the former changed its destination to Susquehanna Transfer in North Bergen. The next station eastbound was the namesake Midland Park station and westbound was Wyckoff. Wortendyke station consisted of a single low-level side platform with the wooden frame station depot. Interest in railroad service in Franklin Township began with the proposed New Jersey Western Railroad, a project of entrepreneur Cornelius A. Wortendyke.
