Wormeley Cottage
Wormeley Cottage, also known as the Wormeley-Montague House, is a historic home located at Urbanna, Middlesex County, Virginia. One of the few remaining 18th century buildings, it was built on orders of Ralph Wormeley about 1750, when the port town was established. He sold several town lots, including the cottage, in 1770 to James Mills. The -story dwelling features three-bays and a frame side passage plan. The narrow gable roof includes dormers and features an asymmetrical chimney. The recent renovation by Robert Montague III also installed a solar heating unit, one of the first to be installed on a historic property in Virginia. an''Accompanying photo''/ref> It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Urbanna is a town in Middlesex County, Virginia, United States. Urbanna means “City of Anne” and was named in honor of England's Queen Anne. The population was 476 at the 2010 census. Geography Urbanna is located at (37.637796, −76.573149). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km2), of which, 0.4 square miles (1.1 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) of it (17.65%) is water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 543 people, 266 households, and 160 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,286.5 people per square mile (499.2/km2). There were 354 housing units at an average density of 838.7 per square mile (325.4/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 95.58% White (U.S. Census), 3.50% Black, and 0.92% from two or more races. Middlesex County is a county located on the Middle Peninsula in the U.S. state of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 10,625. Its county seat is Saluda. History This area was long settled by indigenous peoples; those encountered by Europeans were of the Algonquian-speaking peoples, part of loose alliance of tribes known as the Powhatan Confederacy. The Nimcock had a village on the river where Urbanna was later developed. English settlement of the area began around 1640, with the county being officially formed in 1668 from a part of Lancaster County. This settlement pushed the Nimcock upriver. The county's only incorporated town, Urbanna, was established by the colonial Assembly in 1680 as one of 20 50-acre port towns designated for trade. Ralph Wormeley (Virginia Politician)
Ralph Wormeley (October 5, 1715-1789) who like his namesake grandfather (Ralph Wormeley Jr., Ralph Wormeley) was a planter and politician who represented Middlesex County, Virginia, Middlesex County in the House of Burgesses. He ans his bookloving and loyalist son also operatedRosegill, Rosegill plantation, now on the National Register for Historic Places, using enslaved labor.
