World Qualification Series (2009)
World Qualification Series (WQS) is a surfing points competition for the honour of competing with the world's best surfers on the ASP World Tour. The WQS is sometimes referred to as 'The Grind' or simply the 'QS' by competitors. History The WQS was introduced in 1992 as a feeder competition to what was then called the WCT (World Championship Tour). Surfing
Surfing is a surface water sport in which an individual, a surfer (or two in tandem surfing), uses a board to ride on the forward section, or face, of a moving wave of water, which usually carries the surfer towards the shore. Waves suitable for surfing are primarily found on ocean shores, but can also be found in standing waves in the open ocean, in lakes, in rivers in the form of a tidal bore, or in wave pools. The term ''surfing'' refers to a person riding a wave using a board, regardless of the stance. There are several types of boards. The Moche of Peru would often surf on reed craft, while the native peoples of the Pacific surfed waves on alaia, paipo, and other such water craft. O'Neill World Cup Of Surfing
The O'Neill World Cup of Surfing is a prestigious event in professional surfing held annually at Pūpūkea (Sunset Beach) on Oahu in Hawaii. The event attracts hundreds of elite surfers from around the world, and is known for its huge waves. It is the second tournament in the Triple Crown of Surfing. History The first competition was held in 1975. Of the 22 surfers who have won the event, 7 went on to become world champions. This competition is the final stop of the 2010 Association of Surfing Professional Tour, and the ASPW Tour as well. Top performers of the event share a prize money that varies from year to year, along with points which go to the Triple Crown competition. Brazil's Raoni Monteiro, 28, became the first South American male in 20 years to win the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach for 2010. Andrew Courtney (born February 3, 1990) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. Biography Born in Clifton, Virginia, Courtney played high school tennis at Robinson Secondary. In 2008 he started his collegiate tennis career at the University of Virginia, where he became a three-time doubles All-American. The highlight of his career was winning the 2010 NCAA doubles championship with Michael Shabaz, beating second seeds John-Patrick Smith and Davey Sandgren of Tennessee in the final. The pair were granted wildcards into the main draw of the 2010 US Open. On the professional tour, Courtney reached a best ranking of 212 in the world and twice competed in main draw of the Washington Open ATP Tour tournament. Gabriel Medina Pinto Ferreira (born 22 December 1993) is a Brazilian professional surfer who won the 2014, 2018 and 2021 WSL World Championships. Blake Thornton
Blake is a surname which originated from Old English. Its derivation is uncertain; it could come from "blac", a nickname for someone who had dark hair or skin, or from "blaac", a nickname for someone with pale hair or skin. Owen Wright (born 16 January 1990) is an Australian professional surfer on the World Surf League (formerly the Association of Surfing Professionals) Men's Championship Tour. His sister, Tyler Wright (surfer), Tyler Wright, is also a competitor on the World Surf League Championship Tour.
