World Federation Of Agricultural Workers
The World Federation of Agricultural Workers (french: Fédération mondiale de travailleurs agricoles, FMTA) was a global union federation bringing together unions representing workers in agriculture industries. The federation was established on 27 April 1921 at a meeting in The Hague. Initially named the International Federation of Christian Agricultural Workers' Unions, the federation affiliated to the International Federation of Christian Trade Unions. By 1979, the federation's affiliates claimed a total of 3,397,000 members. A global union federation (GUF) is an international federation of national trade unions organizing in specific industry sectors or occupational groups. Historically, such federations in the social democratic tradition described as international trade secretariats (ITS),. while those in the Christian democratic tradition described themselves as international trade federations. Equivalent sectoral bodies linked to the World Federation of Trade Unions described themselves as Trade Union Internationals. Many unions are members of one or more global union federations, relevant to the sectors where they have their members. The federation was established on 10 October 1948 at a meeting in Marche-en-Famenne. Initially named the International Christian Federation of Food, Drink, Tobacco and Hotel Workers, the federation was a merger of the International Federation of Christian Trade Unions of Workers in the Food and Drink Trades, the International Federation of Christian Tobacco Workers, and a federation of Christian hotel workers.
