World Bridge Olympiad
The World Team Olympiad was a contract bridge meet organized by the World Bridge Federation every four years from 1960 to 2004. Its main events were world championships for national teams, always including one open and one restricted to women ("Open" and "Women" ''categories'' in WBF terms). A parallel event for seniors was inaugurated in 2000. Contract Bridge
Contract bridge, or simply bridge, is a trick-taking card game using a standard 52-card deck. In its basic format, it is played by four players in two competing partnerships, with partners sitting opposite each other around a table. Millions of people play bridge worldwide in clubs, tournaments, online and with friends at home, making it one of the world's most popular card games, particularly among seniors. The World Bridge Federation (WBF) is the governing body for international competitive bridge, with numerous other bodies governing it at the regional level. Boris Schapiro
Boris Schapiro (22 August 1909 – 1 December 2002) was a British international bridge player. He was a Grandmaster of the World Bridge Federation, and the only player to have won both the Bermuda Bowl (the world championship for national teams) and the World Senior Pairs championship. He won the European teams championship on four occasions as part of the British team. Life Schapiro was born in Riga, Latvia (then part of the Russian Empire) into a prosperous family of Jewish traders. They emigrated at the time of the Russian Revolution, when he was eight years old, and soon settled in England. He was educated at Clifton College and Bradford Technical College in England and at various universities, including the Sorbonne in Paris. Camillo Pabis Ticci
Camillo Pabis Ticci (1920–2003) was an Italian bridge player. He joined the national Blue Team in 1963 and played in the Bermuda Bowl tournament with Giorgio Belladonna, whose long-time partner Walter Avarelli was unavailable. From 1964 he played with Massimo D'Alelio, winning 8 world championship titles. Born in Florence, Pabis-Ticci was an engineer by profession. For many years he wrote "a bridge column in the magazine ''l'Europeo'' which was the most successful of its kind in Italy". Benito Garozzo
Benito Garozzo (born 5 September 1927) is an Italian American bridge player. He won 13 world championship titles with the Italian Blue Team, starting in 1961 when he was added as a last minute substitute for the Bermuda Bowl, playing in regular partnerships with Pietro Forquet to 1972 and then with Giorgio Belladonna. During those championship years he came to be considered by many experts the world's best bridge player. Life Garozzo was born in Naples, Italy, at a time when his family lived primarily in Cairo, Egypt, but Naples was a second, summer home of his mother, four sisters and brother. At age six his brother taught him tresette, a partnership trick-taking game with dummy play. He also learned chess from his brother. During World War II, he lived at a sister's home in Naples, where family and friends played partnership games including tresette. Pietro Forquet
Pietro Forquet (2 July 1925 – 27 January 2023) was an Italian bridge player, one of the most famous in bridge history. He won 15 World championship titles with the Blue Team, playing with Eugenio Chiaradia, Guglielmo Siniscalco and, for the most part, Benito Garozzo. Apart from his excellent play, he was renowned for his nerves of steel. Forquet and Garozzo wrote a book (1967, in Italian) on the Blue Club bidding system, the 1950s Neapolitan system as modified by their partnership, which was published in English as ''The Italian Blue Team bridge book'' (1969). In 1971 he wrote ''Gioca con il Blue Team'', published in English as ''Bridge with the Blue Team'', which is widely considered to be the world's best collection of fascinating bridge deals. Massimo D'Alelio
Massimo "Mimmo" D'Alelio (1916–1998) was an Italian bridge player. He won 13 world championships with the Italian national Blue Team, playing in partnership with Camillo Pabis Ticci during the second half of his career. D'Alelio was born in Naples. He was a journalist who played bridge as an avocation. He was a student and partner of the Blue Team founder and theorist Eugenio Chiaradia. The team retired together after its 1969 Bermuda Bowl world championship and returned together for a successful defense of the quadrennial World Team Olympiad championship in 1972. D'Alelio then retired permanently for health reasons. As a member of the team he had played four systems with four partners. Giorgio Belladonna
Giorgio Belladonna (7 June 1923 – 12 May 1995) was an Italian bridge player, one of the greatest of all time. He won 16 world championship titles with the Blue Team, playing with Walter Avarelli from 1956 to 1969 and later with Benito Garozzo. A leading theoretician, he was the principal inventor of the Roman Club bidding system, from 1956, and with Benito Garozzo after 1969 created Super Precision, a complex strong club based method. He was known as much for his mercurial temperament as for the brilliance of his card play; see, for example, Belladonna coup. Belladonna died of lung cancer, according to his daughter, on 12 May 1995 in Rome. He was survived by his wife Maria Antoinetta, one daughter, one son, and four grandchildren. Walter Avarelli
Walter Avarelli (3 June 1912 – 1987) was an Italian bridge player, a member of the famous Blue Team, with whom he won nine Bermuda Bowls and three World Team Olympiads from 1956 to 1972. Avarelli was born in Rome and became a judge there. He first took up rudimentary bridge during World War II when more than thirty years old. Along with interests in tennis, riding and motor racing, he was especially noted for "his addiction to gastronomy". Avarelli was the longtime partner of Giorgio Belladonna using the Roman Club bidding system. Tobias Stone
Tobias Stone (June 6, 1919 – February 15, 2012) was an American bridge player and writer from New York City. Stone was born in Manhattan. He and Janice Gilbert married in 1955; divorced in 1975. Sidney Silodor
Sidney Silodor (November 13, 1906 – August 4, 1963) was an American bridge player. Silodor was a World Champion, winning the Bermuda Bowl in 1950. Silodor is currently 6th on the all-time list of North American Bridge Championships wins with 34. Silodor was a lawyer from Havertown, Pennsylvania. Silodor was named to its hall of fame by ''The Bridge World'' in 1966, which brought the number of members to nine, and was made a founding member of the ACBL Hall of Fame in 1995. Silodor was born in Newark, New Jersey to Charles and Pauline Silodor, Jewish emigrants from the Russian Empire. He was married to Elizabeth Collins. George Rapée
George Nicholas Rapée (May 22, 1915 – April 1, 1999) was an American bridge player. From 1942 to 1980 he was the most successful player in the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) in its three most important tournaments, the Vanderbilt, Spingold, and Reisinger. He played on the American teams that won the first three Bermuda Bowls, 1950 to 1953. Life Rapée was born and raised in New York City. His parents were from Hungary; his father Erno Rapée was a concert pianist and orchestra conductor. He earned bachelor's and law degrees at New York University and served in the US Army for three years during World War II. He was an attorney and real estate investor or, in the words of his obituary by Alan Truscott, "a real estate lawyer ... assembling properties for development".
