Workflow APIs And Interchange Formats
WAPI is an abbreviation for workflow APIs and interchange formats, published by the Workflow Management Coalition, and incorporating specifications to enable interoperability between different components of workflow management systems and applications.Workflow Management Coalition:WFMC TC-1011 Terminology and Glossary" Issue 3.0, February 1999. WAPI includes: * A range of API calls to support functions between a workflow engine A workflow engine is a software application that manages business processes. Workflow Management Coalition
Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC) was a consortium formed to define standards for the interoperability of workflow management systems. The coalition was disbanded in 2019 and no longer exists. History The Coalition was founded in May 1993 with original members including IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Fujitsu, ICL, Staffware and approximately 300 software and services firms in the business software sector. Over its history, the WfMC had four chairpersons: The WfMC regarded its work as complete as of 2019 and is now accordingly disbanded, while all WfMC-supported awards are now closed. The successful conclusion of its work is reflected in numerous frameworks, standards and languages in the workflow and business process space. Standards work Since its founding, the use of XML has become more widespread. The Coalition's focus was principally around the process definition file interchange, using the standard XML Process Definition Language (XPDL). Workflow Reference Model The ...

Workflow Management System
A workflow management system (WfMS or WFMS) provides an infrastructure for the set-up, performance, and monitoring of a defined sequence of tasks arranged as a workflow application. International standards There are several international standards-setting bodies in the field of workflow management: * Workflow Management Coalition * World Wide Web Consortium * Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards * WS-BPEL 2.0 (integration-centric) and WS-BPEL4People (human task-centric), published by the OASIS Standards Body. The underlying theoretical basis of workflow management is the mathematical concept of a Petri net. Each of the workflow models has tasks (nodes) and dependencies between the nodes. Tasks are activated when the dependency conditions are fulfilled. Workflows for people WfMS allows the user to define different workflows for different types of jobs or processes. For example, in a manufacturing setting, a design document might be automatically ...

Workflow Engine
A workflow engine is a software application that manages business processes. It is a key component in workflow technology and typically makes use of a database server. A workflow engine manages and monitors the state of activities in a workflow, such as the processing and approval of a loan application form, and determines which new activity to transition to according to defined processes (workflows). The actions may be anything from saving an application form in a document management system to sending a reminder e-mail to users or escalating overdue items to management. A workflow engine facilitates the flow of information, tasks, and events. Workflow engines may also be referred to as Workflow Orchestration Engines. Workflow engines mainly have three functions: *Verification of the current process status: Check whether it is valid executing a task, given current status. *Determine the authority of users: Check if the current user is permitted to execute the task. *Executing condit ...
