Words With The Shaman
''Words with the Shaman'' is a three-part instrumental suite by the English singer-songwriter David Sylvian. It was recorded in London in 1985 and released as an EP the same year on Virgin Records. It peaked at #72 in the UK single charts. As Sylvian described in a liner note, ''Words with the Shaman'' was "conceived as musical footnotes of themes started earlier on the album ''Brilliant Trees'' and ..developed as a collaborative group effort." ''Words with the Shaman'' was subsequently re-released with two additional instrumental tracks on Sylvian's compilation album, first only released on cassette '' Alchemy: An Index of Possibilities''. In 1989, the suite appeared on the second of four CDs in the ''Weatherbox'' set. The 1991 US-reissue of Sylvian's ''Brilliant Trees'' album also contained ''Words with the Shaman''. David Sylvian
David Sylvian (born David Alan Batt, 23 February 1958) is an English musician, singer and songwriter who came to prominence in the late 1970s as frontman and principal songwriter of the band Japan. The band's androgynous look and increasingly electronic sound made them an important influence on the UK's early-1980s New Romantic scene. Following their break-up, Sylvian embarked on a solo career with his debut album ''Brilliant Trees'' (1984). His solo work has been described by AllMusic as "far-ranging and esoteric", and has included collaborations with artists such as Ryuichi Sakamoto, Robert Fripp, Holger Czukay, Jon Hassell, Bill Nelson and Fennesz. While his recordings of the 1980s and 1990s were a mixture of pop, jazz fusion, and avant-garde experimentalism mixed with ambient, his more recent compositions have drawn increasingly on musical minimalism and free improvisation. Weatherbox (album)
''Weatherbox'' is a five-CD limited-edition box set by David Sylvian, released in 1989. Only 5000 copies were produced. The set comprises Sylvian's first four albums: ''Brilliant Trees'', '' Alchemy: An Index of Possibilities'', '' Gone to Earth'' and ''Secrets of the Beehive''; and was, at the time, the only way to acquire all of the songs from ''Gone to Earth'' on compact disc. ''Weatherbox'' is notable for giving each disc entirely new artwork based around the classical elements. The second half of ''Gone to Earth'' was retitled ''Gone to Earth Instrumental'' for this box set. The song "Preparations for a Journey" from ''Alchemy'' was removed, despite being part of the original album, and replaced by two tracks issued as B-sides to the "Pop Song" single. Percy Jones (born 3 December 1947) is a Welsh bass guitarist known as a member of the jazz fusion ensemble Brand X, from 1974-1980, and 1992-1999. Jones, who was born near Llandrindod Wells, has also done extensive work as a session musician, and has been active with other groups. He played with a New York City trio called Stone Tiger (featuring guitarist Bill Frisell and drummers Mike Clark and Dougie Bowne during different periods) in 1982/83 Jones was also the driving force behind Tunnels, an improvisation collective which released four albums including Progressivity and Live From The Knitting Factory. Holger Schüring (24 March 1938 – 5 September 2017), known professionally as Holger Czukay (), was a German musician best known as a co-founder of the krautrock group Can. Described as "successfully bridg ngthe gap between pop and the avant-garde", Czukay was also notable for having created early important examples of ambient music, for having explored " world music" well before the term was coined, and for having been a pioneer of sampling. Jon Hassell (March 22, 1937 – June 26, 2021) was an American trumpet player and composer. He was best known for developing the concept of "Fourth World" music, which describes a "unified primitive/futurist sound" combining elements of various world ethnic traditions with modern electronic techniques. The concept was first articulated on '' Fourth World, Vol. 1: Possible Musics'', his 1980 collaboration with Brian Eno. Born in Tennessee, Hassell studied contemporary classical music in New York and later in Germany under composer Karlheinz Stockhausen.
