Wordhunt
Wordhunt was a national appeal run by the ''Oxford English Dictionary'', looking for earlier evidence of the use of 50 words and phrases in the English language. New evidence found by members of the public in response to the appeal appears in the ''Oxford English Dictionary''. The appeal is a companion to the BBC2 television series ''Balderdash and Piffle''. First Wordhunt The first Wordhunt was launched in 2005 by the ''Oxford English Dictionary'' and the BBC and resulted in the OED updating the entries of 34 words and phrases, featured in the first series of ''Balderdash and Piffle'' broadcast in early 2006. Mackem
Mackem, Makem or Mak'em a nickname for residents of and people from Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, Sunderland, a city in North East England. It is also a name for the local dialect and accent (not to be confused with Geordie); and for a fan, of whatever origin, of Sunderland A.F.C. It has been used by (a proportion of) the people of Sunderland to describe themselves since the 1980s, prior to which it was mainly used in Tyneside as a disparaging exonym. Prior to the 1980s, the people of Sunderland were known as Geordies, in common with people from Tyneside. An alternative name for a Mackem (except in the sense of a football supporter) is a Wearsider. Balderdash And Piffle
''Balderdash and Piffle'' is a British television programme on BBC in which the writers of the ''Oxford English Dictionary'' asked the public for help in finding the origins and first known citations of a number of words and phrases. Presented by Victoria Coren, it was a companion to the dictionary's Wordhunt project. The ''OED'' panel consisted of John Simpson, the Chief Editor of the ''OED''; Peter Gilliver, who was also the captain of the Oxford University Press team in '' University Challenge: The Professionals''; and etymologist Tania Styles, who also appeared in the "dictionary corner" in ''Countdown''. Oxford English Dictionary
The ''Oxford English Dictionary'' (''OED'') is the first and foundational historical dictionary of the English language, published by Oxford University Press (OUP). It traces the historical development of the English language, providing a comprehensive resource to scholars and academic researchers, as well as describing usage in its many variations throughout the world. Work began on the dictionary in 1857, but it was only in 1884 that it began to be published in unbound fascicles as work continued on the project, under the name of ''A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles; Founded Mainly on the Materials Collected by The Philological Society''. Nerd
A nerd is a person seen as overly intellectual, obsessive, introverted or lacking social skills. Such a person may spend inordinate amounts of time on unpopular, little known, or non-mainstream activities, which are generally either highly technical, abstract, or relating to topics of science fiction or fantasy, to the exclusion of more mainstream activities. Additionally, many so-called nerds are described as being shy, quirky, pedantic, and unattractive. Originally derogatory, the term "nerd" was a stereotype, but as with other pejoratives, it has been reclaimed and redefined by some as a term of pride and group identity. Mushy Peas
Mushy peas are dried marrowfat peas which are first soaked overnight in water with sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), and then rinsed in fresh water, after which the peas are gathered in a saucepan, covered with water, and brought to a boil, and then simmered until the peas are softened and ''mushy''. The mush is seasoned with salt and pepper. Throughout the British Isles (Northern England and the Midlands (England), Midlands in particular) they are a traditional accompaniment to fish and chips. In Northern England they are also commonly served as part of a popular snack called pie and peas (akin to the South Australian pie floater; but instead of the thick pea soup of the floater, in pie and peas it is mushy peas which accompany the meat pie) and are considered to be a part of traditional British cuisine. Moony
Monica "Moony" Bragato (born 27 September 1980) is an Italian singer. She is best known as the vocalist on DB Boulevard's hit single "Point of View", as well as for her own single "Dove (I'll Be Loving You)". Raised in Venice, Moony was first noticed singing in the Venetian club scene and was asked to provide vocals for a number of songs by DJ and producer Spiller. The first single was "Positive", in 1998, sampled "Physical", the song of Olivia Newton-John, and the second single with Spiller was "Batucada" (1999).
