Worcestershire And South Warwickshire (European Parliament Constituency)
Prior to its uniform adoption of proportional representation in 1999, the United Kingdom used first-past-the-post for the European elections in England, Scotland and Wales. The European Parliament constituencies used under that system were smaller than the later regional constituencies and only had one Member of the European Parliament each. The constituency of Worcestershire and South Warwickshire was one of them. European Parliament
The European Parliament (EP) is one of the legislative bodies of the European Union and one of its seven institutions. Together with the Council of the European Union (known as the Council and informally as the Council of Ministers), it adopts European legislation, following a proposal by the European Commission. The Parliament is composed of 705 members (MEPs). It represents the second-largest democratic electorate in the world (after the Parliament of India), with an electorate of 375 million eligible voters in 2009. Since 1979, the Parliament has been directly elected every five years by the citizens of the European Union through universal suffrage. Stratford-on-Avon is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2010 by the Nadhim Zahawi, a member of Conservative Party, who briefly served as the Chancellor of the Exchequer in mid-2022. Gisela Stuart, Baroness Stuart of Edgbaston (''née'' Gschaider; born 26 November 1955) is a British-German politician and life peer who served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Birmingham Edgbaston from 1997 to 2017. West Midlands was a constituency of the European Parliament. It was represented by seven MEPs using the D'Hondt method of party-list proportional representation. The 1999 European Parliament election was the United Kingdom's part of the European Parliament election 1999. It was held on 10 June 1999. Following the European Parliamentary Elections Act 1999, it was the first European election to be held in the United Kingdom where the whole country used a system of proportional representation. In total, 87 Members of the European Parliament were elected from the United Kingdom across twelve new regional constituencies. The change in voting system resulted in significant changes in seats. The Conservatives won double the number of seats they had won in the previous European election, in 1994, while the Labour Party saw its seats reduced from 62 to 29. The Liberal Democrats saw their number of seats increase to 10 from just 2 in the previous election. John Corrie
John Alexander Corrie (born 29 July 1935) is a Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party politician and chief of Clan Corrie. He describes himself in ''Who's Who'' as a "consultant on African affairs and financial adviser to developing countries". Early life Corrie was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy, George Watson's College, Edinburgh and Lincoln Agricultural College, New Zealand. He is a farmer, and was the Nuffield Scholar in agriculture 1972/1973. Political career Corrie was Chairman of the Young Unionists from 1963–64. Corrie contested North Lanarkshire in 1964 and Central Ayrshire in 1966. He was Member of Parliament for Bute and Northern Ayrshire from February 1974 to 1983, and for Cunninghame North from 1983 until the 1987 general election, when he lost his seat to the Labour Party candidate Brian Wilson.
