Woody (formerly, Weringdale) is an unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Kern County, California, Kern County, California, in the United States. It is located in the foothills of the Greenhorn Mountains, north-northeast of Bakersfield, California, Bakersfield at an elevation of . History Woody was named after Sparrell Walter Woody, who homesteaded with his wife at the foot of Blue Mountain in 1862. The Woody School District was founded in 1873 and a post office opened in 1889. Copper was discovered near Woody in 1891 by Joseph Weringer, who founded the Greenback Mine and built the nine-room Weringdale Hotel. Quartz gold was found on Blue Mountain in 1894, and the population of the town, then known as Weringdale, grew to over a hundred. Joaquin Murrieta
Joaquin Murrieta Carrillo (sometimes spelled Murieta or Murietta) (1829 – July 25, 1853), also called the Robin Hood of the West or the Robin Hood of El Dorado, was a Mexican-American figure of disputed historicity. The novel '' The Life and Adventures of Joaquín Murieta: The Celebrated California Bandit'' (1854) by John Rollin Ridge ostensibly recounts his story. Legends subsequently arose about a notorious outlaw in California during the California Gold Rush of the 1850s, but evidence for a historical Murrieta is scarce. Contemporary documents record testimony in 1852 concerning a minor horse thief of that name. Newspapers reported'' banditos'' named Joaquin, who robbed and killed several people during the same time. Glennville Adobe
The Glennville Adobe is a California Historical Landmark number 495 in Kern County, California. The house is the oldest in Kern County, built about 1858. The adobe became a California State Historical Landmark No. 495 on October 17, 1951. The house is located at 7977 Highway 155, Woody, California. The house was built by Thomas Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald owned a trading post nearby on an Indian trail when he built the adobe brick house. Since the 1950s the Glennville Adobe has been used as a Fire Department substation. Greenhorn Mountains
The Greenhorn Mountains are a mountain range of the Southern Sierra Nevada, in California. They are protected within the Sequoia National Forest. Geography The range is located in eastern Kern County and Tulare County. They are east of the San Joaquin Valley, northeast of Bakersfield, and form the west side of the Kern River Valley. The range reaches an elevation of at Sunday Peak, located just south of Portuguese Pass. The lower Kern Canyon is a dramatic and deep canyon cut by the Kern River through the Greenhorn Mountains to the San Joaquin Valley. State Route 178 follows the canyon up to the Kern River Valley.
