Woodsville is a census-designated place (CDP) and the largest village in the town of Haverhill in Grafton County, New Hampshire, United States, along the Connecticut River at the mouth of the Ammonoosuc River. The population was 1,431 at the 2020 census. Although North Haverhill is now the county seat of Grafton County, the village of Woodsville has traditionally been considered the county seat, as the county courthouse was originally located there. The county buildings are now located halfway between Woodsville and the village of North Haverhill to the south. History Woodsville was named for John L. Woods, a figure in its early development. He arrived from Wells River, Vermont, a village across the Connecticut River narrows in Newbury, and in 1829 purchased a sawmill which had been operating on the Ammonoosuc River since 1811. Mountain Lakes is a census-designated place (CDP) in the towns of Haverhill and Bath in Grafton County, New Hampshire, United States. It had a population of 504 at the 2020 census. The Haverhill portion of the community is an independent incorporated district, with its own water system, planning board, and recreation program, and is guided by a three-member elected board of commissioners and annual district meeting. Geography The Haverhill portion of Mountain Lakes surrounds two namesake lakes constructed on Waterman Brook, a north-flowing tributary of the Wild Ammonoosuc River. The CDP extends to the north into the neighboring town of Bath, as far as the Wild Ammonoosuc and the Swiftwater Covered Bridge. Benton is a town in Grafton County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 374 at the 2020 census. Located in the White Mountains, Benton is largely surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest. The town is crossed by the Appalachian Trail. History The town was granted by Governor Benning Wentworth on January 31, 1764, to Theophilus Fitch and others. It was named "Coventry" after Coventry, Connecticut, hometown to many of the settlers, who arrived shortly after the beginning of the Revolution. At the suggestion of Governor Isaac Hill, the name was changed on December 4, 1840, to Benton, in honor of Thomas Hart Benton, the Missouri senator who championed American westward expansion.
