Woodstock Castle (Athy)
Woodstock Castle is a 13th-century stone castle located in Athy, Ireland. Location Woodstock Castle is located in the north of Athy, on the west bank of the River Barrow. History Woodstock Castle was built in the early 13th century by Robert de St Michael, a Normans, Norman lord who was granted Rheban Castle and the surrounding area by Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, Richard de Clare (Strongbow). It is sited near the "ford (river), ford of Ae" (''Áth Í'') which gives Athy its name. Initially the fortifications consisted of earthen banks topped with palisades but these were later replaced by stone walls in the form of a keep, hall-keep, a rectangular structure with a large hall and underground storage. The Crutched Friars established a monastery next to Woodstock Castle in the 13th century. On at least four occasions during that century the village of Athy, including Woodstock Castle and the monasteries, was attacked and badly damaged by the displaced Gaelic Irish.I ... Athy
Athy ( ; ) is a market town at the meeting of the River Barrow and the Grand Canal in south-west County Kildare, Ireland, 72 kilometres southwest of Dublin. A population of 9,677 (as of the 2016 census) makes it the sixth largest town in Kildare and the 50th largest in the Republic of Ireland, with a growth rate of approximately 60 per cent since the 2002 census. Name Athy or ''Baile Átha Í'' is named after a 2nd-century Celtic chieftain, Ae, who is said to have been killed on the river crossing, thus giving the town its name "the town of Ae's ford". White's Castle (Athy)
White's Castle is a 16th-century tower house in Athy, Ireland. Built on the site of an earlier 15th-century castle, White's Castle was built to guard the main river crossing in Athy () and was extended over successive centuries. Location White's Castle is located in the centre of Athy, on the east bank of the River Barrow, overlooking Crom Abú Bridge. It is three-storey tower house with a battered base. On the right of the main doorway is a depiction of coat-of-arms of the Earl of Kildare. History Though much of the current structure dates to the 16th century, there was likely an earlier structure on this site, as a 1297 document records that David Fitz le Feure was held in "the ward of Athy". A Norman tower house was built on the site in 1417 by John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, King's Lieutenant, during the reign of King Henry V, to protect the new bridge over the River Barrow. Woodstock Music and Art Fair, commonly referred to as Woodstock, was a music festival held during August 15–18, 1969, on Max Yasgur's dairy farm in Bethel, New York, United States, southwest of the town of Woodstock, New York, Woodstock.
