Woodstock is a rural town and locality in the City of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. In the , Woodstock had a population of 239 people. Geography Woodstock is south of Townsville. The area in the head of the catchments for the Ross River. The Ross River Dam is a major source of water for Townsville and the Majors Creek/ Upper Haughton area. There is a substation at Woodstock to boost power to the area and it feeds into the Kelso substation in the Upper Ross area of Townsville. History The town takes its name from the Woodstock pastoral run, which was named in 1863, by Mark Watt Reid, station manager for pastoralist John Melton Black. Woodstock Provisional School No opened in September 1890. On 1 January it became Woodstock State School. The preschool burnt down around Christmas 2004. Ross River Dam
The Ross River Dam is a rock and earthfill-filled embankment dam across the Ross River, located between Kelso and Mount Stuart in the City of Townsville in northern Queensland, Australia. Built initially for flood control, Lake Ross, the impoundment created by the dam, serves as one of the major potable water supplies for the region. The dam reached 250% capacity in February 2019 as a result of mass rainfall and flooding in the area. Location and features The dam was constructed by Leighton Contractors in 1971 for the purposes of flood mitigation and water storage. The dam was an attempt to address Townsville's dual water concerns--abundance and scarcity--and added to the city's long history of attempting to tame the natural environment. Woodstock Airport, Queensland
Donnington Airpark is located on the Flinders Highway at Woodstock, a suburb of Townsville in Australia. It is also called Woodstock Airport and is known for its airshows. History The airpark and associated grass runways were constructed on virgin bushland by Ray Smith in 1969, as a satellite airfield to Townsville Airport, for general aviation. There are other airfields in the Woodstock area. The Donnington Country Fly-In, later known as the Donnington Airshow and Country Fly-In, was held annually at Donnington Airpark from 1979 to 1993 inclusive. It showcased a wide range of aircraft types, from ultralights and gyrocopters to commercial, military and warbirds, with associated historic vehicle displays, trade displays and entertainment. The event was held as a fund-raiser for the Near and Far Auxiliary of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia (RFDS) and was the longest-running privately organised airshow in North Queensland. Giru is a town and coastal locality in the Shire of Burdekin, Queensland, Australia, situated on the Haughton River, south-east of Townsville. In the , the locality of Giru had a population of 354 people. Geography Giru is mainly sugarcane farms. The Invicta sugar mill in Giru is owned by Wilmar Sugar Cane Limited with three iconic chimney stacks. The Bruce Highway bypasses the town. History The name of the town and the locality derives from the railway station name, assigned on 31 March 1916, derived from "goru", a type name for a species of sugarcane from New Guinea which was successfully experimented with and widely grown in the district. Flinders Highway, Queensland
The Flinders Highway is a highway that crosses Queensland east to west, from Townsville on the Pacific coast to Cloncurry. The road continues as the Barkly Highway from Cloncurry to the Northern Territory border at Camooweal and beyond. The Flinders Highway passes a number of small outback towns and typical outback landscape predominates towards the inland. It was known as National Route 78 before Queensland began to convert to the alphanumeric system being adopted in Australia and is now designated as A6. The highway is also known as Overlanders Way. City Of Thuringowa
The City of Thuringowa () was a city and local government area in North Queensland, Australia covering the northern and western parts of what is now Townsville. The suburb of Thuringowa Central is the main business centre in this area. Thuringowa was named after the German state of Thuringia where the shire's first chairman, John von Stieglitz, originated. Prior to its proclamation as a city on 1 January 1986, Thuringowa was a large rural shire, almost surrounding the City of Townsville. In 2007 the Queensland Government recommended that the Thuringowa City Council and the Townsville City Council be merged as part of the review of councils and boundaries, with the merged entity to be referred to as the Townsville City Council and the city being called the New Townsville City. John Melton Black
John Melton Black (1830–1919) was a pioneer of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. Black ordered the expedition of Cleveland Bay to find a suitable site for a port and then established the Port of Townsville and the associated town of Townsville. He served for two terms as Mayor of Townsville. Early life Black was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1830, the son of a physician. Black become a merchant and moved to London. It was there that he heard of the Australian goldfields. Victoria Black immigrated to Melbourne where he made his fortune, not by mining gold but by establishing a business as a carrier. In 1855 he established the first Theatre Royal in Melbourne on the north side of Bourke Street, able to hold more than 3000 people. The opening production was '' The School for Scandal''.
