Woodside Valley Foundation
Woodside Valley Estate is a premium Australian wine business originally focused on a vineyard near Yallingup, in the Margaret River wine region of Western Australia. Since 2012, the business and the vineyard have been separately owned. History Established in 1998, Woodside Valley Estate was developed by a small syndicate of investors led by Peter Woods. In a departure from accepted local viticultural practices, the founders, working under the inspiration of the French explorer Nicolas Baudin, planted the Estate's vineyard on slopes facing south instead of north. Baudin's major scientific expedition to Australia of 1800 to 1803, aboard the corvettes '' Géographe'' and '' Naturaliste'', had been conducted on the assumption, contrary to established tradition, that the best passage for sailing ships between Cape Leeuwin and Bass Strait was from west to east. Cape Leeuwin
Cape Leeuwin is the most south-westerly (but not most southerly) mainland point of the Australian continent, in the state of Western Australia. Description A few small islands and rocks, the St Alouarn Islands, extend further in Flinders Bay to the east of the cape. The nearest settlement, north of the cape, is Augusta. South-east of Cape Leeuwin, the coast of Western Australia extends much further south. Cape Leeuwin is not the southernmost point of Western Australia, with that distinction belonging to West Cape Howe, which is to the southeast, near Albany. Antipodean Film Festival
The Antipodean Film Festival (french: Rencontres internationales du cinéma des Antipodes), variously referred to as Festival des Antipodes, Antipodes International Film Festival, Antipodes Film Festival Saint Tropez, Saint Tropez Film Festival and other variations, is a film festival showcasing New Zealand and Australian films, held annually in St Tropez in France since 1999. Most of the events take place at the Renaissance Cinema on Place des Lices in Saint Tropez. The event, which runs for three days, includes a Junior Antipodes section and a feature film competition. James Halliday (wine)
James Halliday (born 1938) is an Australian wine writer and critic, winemaker, and senior wine competition judge. Since 1979 he has written and co-authored more than 40 books on wine, including contributions to the ''Larousse Encyclopedia of Wine'' and ''The Oxford Companion to Wine''. Since 1986 he has published an annual overview of Australian wine which (since 2000) has been entitled ''James Halliday Annual Wine Companion''. Jancis Robinson has described Halliday as the protégé of Len Evans, and his successor "as Australia’s leading wine writer". Career James Halliday studied law at the University of Sydney. He started his wine career while being a partner at Clayton Utz from 1966 to 1988 (with a break from 1974 to 1976 when he worked for a merchant bank). Bass Strait
Bass Strait () is a strait separating the island state of Tasmania from the Australian mainland (more specifically the coast of Victoria, with the exception of the land border across Boundary Islet). The strait provides the most direct waterway between the Great Australian Bight and the Tasman Sea, and is also the only maritime route into the economically prominent Port Phillip Bay. Formed 8,000 years ago by rising sea levels at the end of the last glacial period, the strait was named after English explorer and physician George Bass (1771-1803) by European colonists. French Corvette Naturaliste
''Naturaliste'' was one of the two-vessel ''Salamandre''-class of ''galiotes à bombes'' of the French Navy. Under Jacques Hamelin, and together with '' Géographe'' she took part in the exploration of Australia of Nicolas Baudin. Design and early career She was constructed, and probably designed, by Pierre-Alexandre Forfait. Her plans are dated 14 January 1793. She was launched in 1795 as ''La Menaçante'', and completed as a gabarre. The navy transferred her towards the end of 1798 to Delamotte and Co. to serve as a privateer. In December, however, she was serving as a barracks for a detachment of naval artillerymen. A Sieur Longayron proposed, in December 1799, to charter her to carry some 200-250 colonists to Santo Domingo. Margaret River (wine Region)
Margaret River is the major geographical indication wine region in southwest Western Australia, with 5,017 hectares under vine and 215 wineries as at 2012. Margaret River wine region is made up predominantly of boutique size wine producers; although winery operations range from the smallest crushing 3.5 tonne per year to the largest around 7000 tonne. The climate of Margaret River is more strongly maritime-influenced than any other major Australian region. It has the lowest mean annual temperature range, of only 7.6 °C, and as well as the most marked Mediterranean climate in terms of rainfall, with only 200 millimetres of the annual 1160 millimetres falling between October and April.
