Wooddale Bridge
Wooddale Bridge is a covered bridge over Red Clay Creek at Wooddale in New Castle County, Delaware. It is one of three covered bridges in the state of Delaware along with the very similar Ashland Covered Bridge and the Smith Bridge. It and the Ashland bridge remain, of the thirteen bridges along the Red Clay Creek that were marked on an 1868 map. Style The Wooddale Bridge is a Town lattice truss bridge following a design by Ithiel Town and is approximately long. It originally sat on mortared rough-cut stone abutments, with rock-slab-capped poured concrete guard walls. The floor of the bridge was diagonal planking, with vertical boarding on the sides that had square window openings to expose the white painted truss on either side. History The original bridge was built about 1850 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It was destroyed by flooding from Tropical Storm Henri in 2003. Wooddale is an unincorporated community in New Castle County, Delaware, United States. Wooddale is located along the Red Clay Creek and Rolling Mill Road, west of Wilmington. History The community was home to the Wooddale Paper Mills and iron mills in the 1800s. The Spring Valley Brewing Company, led by F. Hermann Biedermann sold draft beer to saloons within the neighborhood in the late 1800s. The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) is an agency of the U.S. state of Delaware. The Secretary of Transportation is Nicole Majeski. Tropical Storm Henri (2003)
Tropical Storm Henri was a moderate tropical storm that formed in the 2003 Atlantic hurricane season. The eighth storm of the season, Henri was one of six tropical cyclones to hit the United States in the year. Henri formed from a tropical wave in the Gulf of Mexico in early September, and crossed over Florida as a tropical depression. Its remnants later moved into the Mid-Atlantic before dissipating completely. Henri caused little damage as a tropical cyclone. In Florida, it dropped heavy rainfall, though damage was limited to minor flooding damage. In Delaware and Pennsylvania, damage was greater, where heavy rainfall damaged hundreds of houses and businesses. The resulting floods in Delaware were described as a 1 in 500 year event.
