Woodbury (Leetown, West Virginia)
Woodbury or Woodberry, is a historic mansion located near Leetown, Jefferson County, West Virginia. It was built in 1834-1835 for the jurist and Congressman Henry St. George Tucker, Sr. (1780–1848). Tucker lived at Woodbury from its construction until 1844. Description Woodbury is stories tall and is built of stone, faced with white plaster in a Regency period style. At and 22 rooms, it is an unusually large house. The front facade features a flat-roofed center portico supported by four plain columns in front and two engaged columns in the rear. The five-bay elevation is raised above a particularly high raised basement. The end elevations have prominent stepped parapets incorporating the chimneys. The interior plan features a long transverse hall with a curved stairway at one end. A false window was provided at the right side of the first floor to deal with the stair crossing the window. Leetown, West Virginia
Leetown is an unincorporated community in Jefferson County in the U.S. state of West Virginia. It lies along West Virginia Secondary Route 1 at its junction with Leetown Pike. An early historical distinction of the town is the interesting confluence of the estates of three British born, British colonial military officers who served under General Braddock and were all involved in the disastrous British operations against French and Indian forces at Fort Duquesne (modern Pittsburgh) and who later became American revolutionary officers under George Washington. The town is named for the eccentric General Charles Lee, a British officer. He was born in Cheshire in 1732 and purchased an estate in Virginia in 1776. He called the estate " Prato Rio" and the main house rests today just south of town. Jefferson County is located in the Shenandoah Valley in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. It is the easternmost county of the U.S. state of West Virginia.
