Wood River (British Columbia)
The Wood River, which flows in a southwesterly direction, is in the East Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The former confluence was near the top of the Big Bend Country, Big Bend of the Columbia River. After the enlarged Kinbasket Lake formed the Mica Dam reservoir, the flow entered Wood Arm. Name origin In their respective journals, the waterway was called Flat Heart River by David Thompson (explorer), David Thompson (1811) (reflecting his men's timidity), Little Canoe River by Gabriel Franchère (1814) (adjacent to Canoe River (British Columbia), Canoe River mouth), and Portage River by Alexander Ross (fur trader), Alexander Ross (1824) (largely unnavigable). In 1874, Sandford Fleming referred to the valley of Portage or Wood River. The name origin is unclear but may have indicated that the woodlands rather than the river provided the means of traversing this section. Little Wood River is a U.S. Geological Survey. National Hydrography Dataset high-resolution flowline dataThe National Map, accessed May 4, 2011 river in south-central Idaho in the United States. It is a tributary of the Malad River, which in turn is tributary to the Snake River and Columbia River. Description The Little Wood River originates in the Pioneer Mountains of northern Blaine County, then flows south through Little Wood Reservoir near Carey. Below the reservoir the river flows south into Lincoln County, past Richfield, and then west, past Shoshone, after which it enters Gooding County. Just west of Gooding, the Little Wood River joins the Big Wood River to form the Malad River. Its tributaries include Baugh Creek. The Little Wood River is the key source of irrigation water for eastern Blaine County and most of Lincoln County.
