Wongarra
Wongarra is a coastal locality in the Shire of Colac Otway, Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. In the 2016 Australian census, 2016 census, Wongarra had a population of 37. The Great Ocean Road runs along the coastline through Wongarra, with Sunnyside Road the only road running inland in the area. Much of the northern area of Wongarra is either state forest or lies within the Great Otway National Park. The locality contains scenic tourist destinations Cape Patton and the Carisbrook Falls. A postal receiving office opened at Wongarra from 1 October 1912. Wongarra Post Office opened on 1 July 1927 and closed on 11 December 1971. A part-time school, shared with one at neighbouring Skenes Creek, Victoria, Skenes Creek was open by 1905, at which time it was operating out of leased premises. Sugarloaf, Victoria
Sugarloaf is a small coastal locality in the Shire of Colac Otway, Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. In the census in Australia#2011, 2011 census, the population of Sugarloaf was too low to separately report; however in November 2014 the Victorian Electoral Commission recorded 10 enrolled voters in Sugarloaf, living in 9 properties. The locality is centred on a 30m high sand dune along the Great Ocean Road, and derives its name from an observation that it looked like a sugarloaf. It sits at the mouth of the Sugarloaf Creek, and fronts onto a cove known locally as Onion Bay. Sugarloaf is completely surrounded on land by the larger locality of Wongarra, Victoria, Wongarra. A former Redemptionist Fathers monastery is located at Sugarloaf. After its closure, it operated as short-term accommodation for people living with mental illness through Mind Australia. Grey River, Victoria
Grey River is a rural locality in the Shire of Colac Otway, Victoria, Australia. It lies on the Great Ocean Road at the mouth of the Grey River, from which it derives its name. Grey River Beach is located in the area, and contains car parking and picnic facilities. Surf Life Saving Australia notes that the beach "is often more boulder than sand" and "unsuitable for safe bathing, apart from in the protected tidal pools at high tide." The coastline in this area is commonly used for rock fishing. Petticoat Creek, Victoria
Petticoat Creek is a small coastal locality in the Shire of Colac Otway, Victoria, Australia. In the 2011 census, the population of Petticoat Creek was too low to report separately; however in November 2014 the Victorian Electoral Commission recorded two enrolled voters in Petticoat Creek, living in two properties. The locality reportedly derives its name from the family of a settler, Henry Mutlow Biddle, who had eight daughters who used to hang their petticoats to dry out by the creek that ran past their house. The Great Ocean Road runs through the locality, and is the only road in the area. The beach at Petticoat Creek is dominated by a rock platform, but with enough sand behind it for sunbathing and picnicking. The Shire of Colac Otway is a local government area in the Barwon South West region of Victoria, Australia, located in the south-western part of the state. It covers an area of and in June 2018 had a population of 21,503. Kennett River is a small seaside town in Victoria, Australia. Situated west of Melbourne, on the Otway Coast portion of the scenic Great Ocean Road, Kennett River is a popular tourist destination from the resort town of Lorne, Victoria. History The river running through the town was named by surveyor George Smythe after the River Kennet in Berkshire, England. Mount Sabine, Victoria
Mount Sabine is a rural locality in the Shire of Colac Otway, Victoria, Australia. The small locality is located deep in the Otway Ranges, and is mostly densely forested. The first major track between Colac and Apollo Bay passed over Mount Sabine, and was marked on maps by 1864 at the latest. The Land Act 1869 opened the area up for selection, but only a limited number of selectors took up land, mostly along the Apollo Bay or nearby Beech Forest tracks. The track was rough; in 1880, travellers complained that the road was "almost impassable" and that they had "to wade up to their knees in mud and slush", and in 1889 a correspondent reported the track from Apollo Bay to Mount Sabine as involving "the most formidable climbing ever met with on a road in this country". Great Otway National Park
The Great Otway National Park is a national park located in the Barwon South West region of Victoria, Australia. The national park is situated approximately southwest of Melbourne, in the Otway Ranges, a low coastal mountain range. It contains a diverse range of landscapes and vegetation types. History Commercial logging began in the Otway Ranges in the 1880s. After World War One, with improvements to the roads and railways, logging increased massively, peaking in 1961, almost entirely stripping the Otway Ranges of its old-growth forest and causing land degradation issues, but has since been greatly reduced. Philip Grant Anderson (born 20 March 1958) is a British-born Australian former professional racing cyclist who was the first non-European to wear the yellow jersey of the Tour de France.
