Women's Lacrosse
Women's lacrosse (or girls' lacrosse), sometimes shortened to lax, is a field sport played at the international level with two opposing teams of ten players each (12 players per team at the U.S. domestic level). Originally played by indigenous peoples of the Americas, the modern women's game was introduced in 1890 at the St Leonard's School in St Andrews, Scotland. The rules of women's lacrosse differ significantly from field lacrosse, men's field lacrosse. The two are often considered to be different sports with a common root. The object of the game is to use a long-handled stick (known as a ''crosse'' or lacrosse stick) to catch, cradle, and pass a solid rubber lacrosse ball in an effort to score by hurling the ball into an opponent's goal. College lacrosse is played by student-athletes at colleges and university, universities in the United States and Canada. Goaltender (field Lacrosse)
In field lacrosse, the goaltender (goalie, goalkeeper, or the keeper) is the most important and last line of defense between the opposing offense and the goal. The goaltender's primary roles are to defend the opposing team's shots on goal and to direct the defense. Rules Goaltenders are the only ones on the field who can touch the ball with their hands. However, they are not allowed to pick up or control the ball with their hands. Hand touches are legal only when in the crease. Each team has a goaltender on the field at all times. If the goaltender stops a shot by the opposing team, or picks the ball up any other way, the goaltender has four seconds in the crease to pass the ball or run with the ball. Montreal Lacrosse Club
The Montreal Lacrosse Club was a lacrosse club in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The club is notable in the history of lacrosse as it was responsible for establishing the first set of written rules of the game. The club was established in 1856 by the Montreal dentist, Dr. William George Beers. One of Dr. Beers' innovations, the replacement of a hair-stuffed deerskin ball with a hard rubber ball, continues to this day.
