Women's Football In Israel
Women's football in Israel is gaining popularity but female players often play abroad to improve their skills. Some of the barriers that prevent the sport from growing include prejudice against women for playing soccer. Other main causes are lack of budgets, sponsors and proper budget management. As in any competitive sports field, lack of transparency is always a big barrier on its own and creates a hidden competition among the athletes. Israeli women's football suffers from years of neglect from the authorities and was always the last in terms of priority. The main effort to improve and establish a future for this sport was in the hand of the managers and private people that usually were struggling alone to collect budget to create youth teams in the different clubs in order to create a future generation. The Israeli Women's Cup ( he, גביע המדינה נשים, ''Gvia HaMedina Nashim'') is the annual knock-out tournament of women's football teams in Israel. It is equivalent to the men's Israel State Cup, and organized by the Israel Football Association (IFA). Its first season was played in 1998–99. Maccabi Holon had won the most titles, winning for the ninth time in 2012–13. Format The competition is a knockout tournament which includes all members of Ligat Nashim, the Israeli women's football league. Each tie is played as a single leg. If a match is drawn, the game is settled with extra time and penalty shootouts. Ligat Nashim ( he, ליגת נשים, lit. ''Women's League'') is the Israeli women's football league. It has been run by the Israel Football Association since 1998. Format The league is divided into two divisions, with the top division, titled Women's Premier League (previously Ligat Nashim Rishona, lit. "First Women's League"), comprising 9 teams, and the second division, titled Women's Leumit League (previously Ligat Nashim Shniya, lit. "Second Women's League"), comprising a variable number of teams, depending on registration. In 2015, a third division was created, named Mama-Foot League (meaning: a football league for mothers) at first, and changed to Women's Artzit League in 2016. Football as an organised sport, first developed in the United Kingdom, who controlled Mandatory Palestine during the days of the British Mandate. The Israel Football Association joined the Asian Football Confederation in 1954, but was expelled in 1974 due to political pressure from Arab and Muslim members in the context of the Arab–Israeli conflict.
