Women's Cultural Society
The Women's Cultural Society (''Sociedad Cultural Feminina'') was a women's organization in Honduras. It was founded in the 1920s, opposing the regime of Tiburcio Carias Andino and demanding women's economic and political rights. Visitación Padilla and Graciela Amaya de García have each been credited with founding the organization. History The Women's Cultural Society was founded in 1923 or 1924. Founded in Tegucigalpa, the society had close links to the Honduran Union Association. Padilla was the first president, and later followed by Graciela García. The society established free evening classes for adult women, teaching social sciences, mathematics, Spanish, civics and handicrafts. It also hosted cultural and political seminars on cultural and political topics . The society also published a newsletter, ''Women's Culture''. Honduras
Honduras, officially the Republic of Honduras, is a country in Central America. The republic of Honduras is bordered to the west by Guatemala, to the southwest by El Salvador, to the southeast by Nicaragua, to the south by the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Fonseca, and to the north by the Gulf of Honduras, a large inlet of the Caribbean Sea. Visitación Padilla
Visitación Padilla (*Talanga, Francisco Morazán, July 2, 1882 – February 12, 1960, Comayagüela, DC) was an educator and feminist activist. Padilla organized the mutual aid societies of Honduras, strengthened anti-alcohol leagues and fervently organized the rights of Honduran women. Life Visitación Padilla was born in Talanga, a municipality of the Departamento of Francisco Morazán, in the Republic of Honduras. She graduated and became a teacher in 1909, then in 1913 became a member of the organization named “Ateneo de Honduras” together with writers Rafael Heliodoro Valle y Froilán Turcios, introducing her organizational qualities. In 1917, she founded the liberal newspaper “Juan Rafael Mora” in Tegucigalpa. Graciela Amaya De García
Graciela Amaya de García (11 January 1895 – 11 October 1995) was a Central American feminist and labor organizer. Born in El Salvador and trained as a teacher, she moved to Honduras at the age of twenty. Joining the socialist movement, she became a party operative, founding trade unions to resist the labor practices of the industrialists operating in the country. She formed the first feminist organization of Honduras, the Society of Feminist Culture, in 1923 and organized night schools for working women to teach them about their rights. Expelled from Honduras for leading demonstrations against the government in 1944, she fled home to El Salvador but remained only a few months because a coup d'etat brought in a dictatorship. Relocating to Guatemala, García continued with her activities organizing labor and educating working-class people, until she was expelled by the president in 1946. Tegucigalpa (, , ), formally Tegucigalpa, Municipality of the Central District ( es, Tegucigalpa, Municipio del Distrito Central or ''Tegucigalpa, M.D.C.''), and colloquially referred to as ''Tegus'' or ''Teguz'', is the capital and largest city of Honduras along with its sister city, Comayagüela.
