Women's Art Register
The Women’s Art Register is Australia's living archive of women's art practice (cis and trans inclusive or gender diverse). It is a national artist-run, not-for-profit community and resource in Melbourne, Australia. Foundation The Women's Art Register was established in 1975 as an inclusive, grass-roots and independent platform for research, education, advocacy and celebration of Australian women artists. It was formed by artists Lesley Dumbrell and Erica McGilchrist, with the then directors of the Ewing and George Paton Gallery at Melbourne University, Kiffy Carter and Meredith Rogers. It began with one hundred contemporary women artists contributing slides of their work and was housed and administered at the Ewing Gallery. In 1977 the Women's Art Register obtained funding from the Victorian Schools Commission for historical research. Karen Casey (artist)
Karen Casey (7 January 1956–15 October 2021) was an Australian interdisciplinary artist of the Palawa (people), Palawa people, Australia. She was Melbourne's Artist in Residence in 2003. Early life and education Casey was born in Hobart, Tasmania. Casey attended art school at the Tasmanian College of Advanced Education where she studied Silversmith, silversmithing. Following school she moved to Melbourne to work as a graphic designer. Career Casey began exhibiting her artwork in the late 1980s, and worked for over three decades in a diverse range of media, from painting and printmaking to installation, video, performance and public art. Her work investigated the "experiential and philosophical understanding of the interrelationships between various cultural and spiritual traditions and aspects of contemporary western science." Richmond Town Hall, Melbourne
Richmond Town Hall is a civic building located on Bridge Road in Richmond, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. Architecture Built in the 1890s, the original Richmond Town Hall was in the Venetian Gothic Revival style, consisting of polychrome brickwork and a large tower. In the 1930s, the façade was remodelled in the Interwar Academic Classical Revival style, with Art Deco decorations, to become the Richmond City Hall. The Town Hall was refurbished in 1991, but some sections of the rear of the building, and some interior spaces, retain the original Victorian era detailing. After the amalgamation of the City of Richmond with the City of Collingwood and the City of Fitzroy in 1994, to form the new City of Yarra, the Town Hall became the corporate headquarters for the new Yarra City Council. Melbourne Fringe Festival
The Melbourne Fringe Festival is an annual independent arts festival in Melbourne, Australia, usually over three weeks from late September to early October. Held since 1982, the Festival includes a wide variety of art forms, including theatre, comedy, music, performance art, design, film, cabaret, digital art, and circus. Over 300 shows are held at over 100 venues from bars, clubs and independent theatres to high-profile locations. The festival is open-access and artists produce shows independently. Caroline Phillips (visual Artist)
Caroline Phillips (born 1966) is an Australian visual artist who has exhibited works in Australia and internationally in the areas of sculpture, and photography. Phillips' works deploy industrial and textile based materials to critique contemporary feminist aesthetics, through modes of abstraction and materiality. Joan Kerr
Joan Kerr (1938–2004) was an Australian academic and cultural preservationist. Initially her interest was sparked in preserving the architectural heritage of Australia, but over time her interests spread to art history and Australian culture in general. Clarke is a multidisciplinary artist renowned for her work in reviving South-eastern Aboriginal Australian art practices.
