Woman Cooking
''Woman Cooking'' or ''The Cook'' (Italian - ''La cuoca'') is the modern title given to a circa 1625 oil on canvas genre painting by Bernardo Strozzi, produced in Genoa and still held in the Palazzo Rosso in the city, part of the Strada Nuova Museums. A second autograph version with various differences was in the painter's studio at his death and is now at the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh. The Genoa version first appears in the written record in a 1683 inventory of the goods of Gio. Francesco I Brignole-Sale del 1683, with the title "Animals and figure of a standing woman cooking by Prete Cappuccino". At the end of the 18th century it was recorded as hanging in the Palazzo Rosso - that palace and all the artworks it contained were donated to the city of Genoa by Duchessa di Galliera Maria Brignole-Sale De Ferrari in 1874. Ezia Gavazza
Ezia Gavazza (1928-18 April 2019) was an Italian art historian. Along with her friends and colleagues Lauro Magnani and Piero Boccardo, she was one of the most prolific writers in Genoa on Baroque art. She specialised in the Ligurian Baroque, particularly Domenico Piola, Giulio Benso, Giovanni Andrea Ansaldo, Grechetto and Bernardo Strozzi. Life Born in Pozzolo Formigaro, for several years she held the chair in Modern Art History at the University of Genoa before being made Professor Emerita by minister Fabio Mussi. She was a city counsellor for the PCI and also took a major part in Genoa's cultural life by organising exhibitions, publications and specialist conferences. In her final years she settled in the historic city centre of Genoa and continued to collaborate in the city's cultural and academic life. She died in Genoa aged 91. Genre painting (or petit genre), a form of genre art, depicts aspects of everyday life by portraying ordinary people engaged in common activities. The Doge's Palace (Italian: ''Palazzo Ducale'') is a historical building in Genoa, northern Italy. Pieter Aertsen
Pieter Aertsen (1508 – 2 June 1575), called ''Lange Piet'' ("Tall Pete") because of his height, was a Dutch painter in the style of Northern Mannerism. He is credited with the invention of the monumental genre scene, which combines still life and genre painting and often also includes a biblical scene in the background. He was active in his native city Amsterdam but also worked for a long period in Antwerp, then the centre of artistic life in the Netherlands. His genre scenes were influential on later Flemish Baroque painting, Dutch still life painting and also in Italy. His peasant scenes preceded by a few years the much better-known paintings produced in Antwerp by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Career Aertsen was born in Amsterdam, and was apprenticed to Allaert Claesz. He later travelled to the Southern Netherlands and took up residence in Antwerp, first with his compatriot Jan Mandijn. Maria Brignole Sale De Ferrari
Maria Brignole Sale De Ferrari, Duchess of Galliera (5 April 1811 – 9 December 1888) was an Italian noblewoman and philanthropist. She enabled the foundation of the first museums in her birthplace of Genoa, the Palazzo Rosso and Palazzo Bianco as well as the and the San Filippo children's hospital. A statue of her by Giulio Monteverde stands in the hospital gardens.
