Wolseley (Manitoba Electoral District)
Wolseley is a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was created by redistribution in 1957, and has formally existed since the 1958 provincial election. The riding is located in the centre of the City of Winnipeg. It is named for Col. Garnet Joseph Wolseley, the nineteenth-century army officer who played a significant role in crushing the Red River Rebellion in 1870. Wolseley is bordered to the east by Fort Rouge, to the south by River Heights, to the north by Minto, and to the west by St. James. The University of Winnipeg is located in the northeast corner of the riding. The Legislative Assembly of Manitoba is located at the meeting point of Wolseley and Fort Rouge. The riding was predominantly Anglo-Saxon when it was first created; a news report from 1969 indicates that its population had become more diverse by that time. Harold Taylor is a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1988 to 1990, representing the riding of Wolseley for the Manitoba Liberal Party. In 1983 and 1986, he was elected to the Winnipeg City Council in the Memorial district, as an independent candidate supporting the Liberal Party. Taylor was elected to the Manitoba legislature in the 1988 provincial election, defeating incumbent New Democrat Myrna Phillips by 506 votes. Myrna Phillips
Myrna A. Phillips (born November 1942) is a politician in Manitoba, Canada. She was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1981 to 1988, and served as speaker of the assembly from 1986 to 1988. Phillips was born in Roland, Manitoba. Before entering politics, she was active in feminist organizations such as the Equal Rights and Opportunities Commission, and in community programs such as Place for Kids Daycare. She was also a member of the Wolseley Residents's Association in central Winnipeg. Leonard Claydon
Leonard Harold Claydon (December 31, 1915 in Winnipeg, Manitoba – December 8, 1971) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served in the Manitoba legislature as a Progressive Conservative from 1969 until his death. Prime minister John Diefenbaker was a very good friend who visited Leonard in the hospital and wrote the eulogy at his funeral. His funeral was announced on the local news. Claydon was educated at Winnipeg public schools and St. Johns College. He worked as a merchant and technician, and served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1940 to 1946, spending three and a half years overseas and reaching the rank of Flight Lieutenant. Robert Wilson (Manitoba Politician)
Robert George "Bob" Wilson (born November 2, 1934) is a former politician in Manitoba. He represented Wolseley in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1975 to 1981 as a Progressive Conservative and then independent member. He was first elected to the assembly in a 1975 by-election held on June 25, 1975 after Izzy Asper resigned his seat. Wilson was reelected in the 1977 general election, defeating Murdoch Mackay by 75 votes. In September 1979, he was charged with conspiracy to import and traffic in marijuana as the result of drug seizures in May and July of that year. Wilson was expelled from the Progressive Conservative caucus on November 20, 1980 and subsequently sat as an independent member. Markus Buchart is a lawyer and politician in Manitoba, Canada. He was the first leader of the Green Party of Manitoba, serving from 1999 until his resignation in March 2005.
