Wolfe Island Wind Project
Wolfe Island Wind Farm is a large wind farm project located on Wolfe Island, Ontario (near Kingston, Ontario). The wind farm became operational on June 29, 2009. It is owned and operated by Canadian Hydro Developers, Inc., through its subsidiary Canadian Renewable Energy Corporation (CREC). The power will be purchased by Hydro One for distribution to consumers. The wind farm consists of eighty-six 2.3-megawatt ( MW) Siemens model Mark II wind turbines situated on the western portion of Wolfe Island. Once completed, the 197.8 MW project was expected to generate approximately 594 gigawatt-hours ( GW·h) of renewable power annually; enough to supply about 75,000 average households. Wolfe Island (Ontario)
Wolfe Island is an island at the entrance to the Saint Lawrence River in Lake Ontario near Kingston, Ontario. Wolfe Island is part of Frontenac County, Ontario and the Township of Frontenac Islands. It is the largest of the Thousand Islands. The largest community on the island is Marysville, Frontenac County, Ontario, Marysville. The island is about long, with its width varying from around to a few hundred metres at some points; its area is about . The resident population is about 1400 people, but this can double or triple in summer. Padmount Transformer
A padmount or pad-mounted transformer is a ground-mounted electric power distribution transformer in a locked steel cabinet mounted on a concrete pad. Since all energized connection points are securely enclosed in a grounded metal housing, a padmount transformer can be installed in places that do not have room for a fenced enclosure. Padmount transformers are used with underground electric power distribution lines at service drops to step down the primary voltage on the line to the lower secondary voltage supplied to utility customers. A wind turbine is a device that converts the kinetic energy of wind into electrical energy. Hundreds of thousands of large turbines, in installations known as wind farms, now generate over 650 gigawatts of power, with 60 GW added each year.
