Wolf Pack Borkum
''Borkum'' was a wolf pack of German U-boats that operated during the battle of the Atlantic in World War II. Service history ''Borkum'' was formed in December 1943 off the coast of Portugal, to intercept convoys sailing to and from Gibraltar, Mediterranean and South Atlantic. It was composed of U-boats from the disbanded patrol group ''Weddigen'', with reinforcements from bases in occupied France. ''Borkum'' was first detailed to assist the passage of blockade runners ''Osorno'' and ''Alsterufer'' which were returning to base. A surface force was also involved in this operation, code-named ''Bernau''. Allied intelligence was aware of this and deployed forces against them. Borkum ( nds, Borkum, Börkum) is an island and a municipality in the Leer District in Lower Saxony, northwestern Germany. It is situated east of Rottumeroog and west of Juist. A blockade runner is a merchant vessel used for evading a naval blockade of a port or strait. It is usually light and fast, using stealth and speed rather than confronting the blockaders in order to break the blockade.
