SS ''Adolph Woermann'' was a German steam ocean liner built in 1922 by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg for the shipping lines Woermann-Linie (WL) and German East Africa Line (''Deutsche Ostafrika Linie'', DOAL) and named after German merchant, ship owner and politician Adolph Woermann, and the fourth ship of the same name. Details ''Adolph Woermann'' was an oil-fuelled steamship. She had a set of four Blohm & Voss steam turbines that drove a single screw via single reduction gearing. Her code letters were RDBH until 1933–34, when they were superseded by the call sign DHAK. Peacetime service ''Adolph Woermann'' ran aground at Cape Spartivento, Sardinia, Italy, on 24 October 1928. Karl Woermann
Karl Woermann (4 July 1844 – 4 February 1933) was a German art historian and museum director. Biography He was born in Hamburg, studied at various universities (art history at Heidelberg and Munich), and traveled widely. In 1871 Woermann participated in the so-called " Holbein convention" in Dresden, at which a number of prominent art historians convened to determine which of two versions of Hans Holbein the Younger's " Meyer Madonna" was the original work. He was called to the academy at Düsseldorf in 1874 as professor of the history of art and literature. In 1882 he became director of the picture gallery at Dresden, of which he wrote the first scientific catalogue (1897). To the ''Geschichte der Malerei'', begun by Alfred Woltmann, he contributed the part on antique painting, and after Woltmann's death completed the entire work. The Woermann-Linie was a German shipping company that operated from 1885 to 1942. History It was founded on 15 June 1885 by Adolph Woermann and developed as one of the leading shipping companies between Europe and Africa. From 1899 the company was headquartered in Afrikahaus, in Hamburg. For decades it transported contract laborers to various places on the African continent, for instance, workers from Liberia and Nigeria to Spanish Guinea. Woermann Tower
Woermann Tower also Torre Woermann is a mixed-use tower in Las Palmas on Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain. Completed in 2005, the tower was designed by Abalos & Herreros in collaboration with Joaquin Casariego and Elsa Guerra, and built by Ferrovial Inmobiliaria, the company also built around the same time one of the two Torres de Santa Cruz, in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The Woermann Tower forms part of a complex which includes a public square, constructed using Portuguese stone with the artist Albert Oehlen, and a seven-storey block to the south, containing retail units and offices. The ground floor contains a main entrance area and retail units whilst the first floor contains a library. The floors above contain apartments, usually four or five per floor.
