Wives Never Know
''Wives Never Know'' is a 1936 American black-and-white comedy film directed by Elliott Nugent. Written by Frederick Hazlitt Brennan, Edwin Justus Mayer and Keene Thompson, the film stars Charlie Ruggles, Mary Boland, and Adolphe Menjou, and was produced by Adolph Zukor for Paramount Pictures. Plot Homer (Charlie Ruggles) and Marcia Bigelow (Mary Boland) are a happily married couple. Visiting novelist J. Hugh Ramsey (Adolphe Menjou) considers himself both too wise to ever marry and, through hubris, qualified to offer his own wild theories on what constitutes a happy marriage. He had thus written a best selling novel titled ''Marriage, the Living Death''. Ramsey decides that the Bigelow marriage could not possibly be as perfect as it appears, and convinces Homer that his wife must be secretly unhappy because she had never had the opportunity to forgive the morally spotless Homer for any misdeed. Elliott Nugent
Elliott Nugent (September 20, 1896 – August 9, 1980) was an American actor, playwright, writer, and film director. Biography Nugent was born in Dover, Ohio, the son of actor J.C. Nugent. He successfully made the transition from silent film to sound film. He directed ''The Cat and the Canary (1939 film), The Cat and the Canary'' (1939), starring Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard. He also directed the Hope films ''Never Say Die (1939 film), Never Say Die'' (1939) and ''My Favorite Brunette'' (1947). Nugent was a college classmate (and lifelong friend) of fellow Ohioan James Thurber. Together, they wrote the Broadway play ''The Male Animal'' (1940) in which Nugent starred with Gene Tierney. He also directed the 1942 film version of ''The Male Animal'', starring Henry Fonda and Olivia de Havilland. Roger Gray (May 26, 1881 – January 20, 1959) was an American character who was active in the early years of the talking picture era. Born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1881, he began acting later in life, his first role being featured part in 1930's '' Hit the Deck''. Dorothy Fay Hammerton (26 September 1893 – 23 June 1973), known professionally as Fay Holden, was a British-born, American-based actress. She was known as Gaby Fay early in her career.
